The Karura Forest Reserve is an urban upland forest on the outskirts of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. This remarkable geographical location and natural resource is one of the largest gazetted forests in the world fully within a city limits. It covers an area of about 1,000 ha (2,500 ac) and today is a shining example of how country-based corporate social responsibility and individual philanthropy can serve to secure and protect a country's natural resources. The forest offers eco-friendly opportunities for Kenyans and visitors to enjoy a leafy green respite from the hustle and bustle of the city to walk, to jog, or simply to sit quietly and experience the serenity of nature in all its diversity.

This is THE place to go for an idyllic morning run. You can literally run through the forest, under the treetops, next to a stream and natural waterfalls, and through fields of local flora. I didn't even feel the need to apply sunscreen as the tree canopy kept me amply shaded from the hot rays of the sun. On one... More

The forest is a remarkably peaceful part within the heart of the city. There are multiple entrances, and options to walk, run, cycle, or stroll and eat all in complete safety. The bird life is audibly present, and we often 'ran into' monkeys. A great place to exercise, or spend a few hours to reconnect with nature. The Forest is... More

I am so thankful that this gem has remained in Nairobi! It's such a wonderful place to escape to and get lost in for a few hours. We love to go for hikes as a family (be sure to get a map before going in so you don't get lost! We accidentally made the mistake of taking a wrong turn... More

I have spent many an hour walking around the beautiful forest, the hard thing to imagine is that this is in a middle of a very busy city. You are so safe when walking around and I frequently walk around while my husband runs. If you are early enough you can see did diks and monkeys a beautiful array of butterflies... More

Great place to chill and have a break from the city. Very nice relaxing atmosphere. Rented some bicycles and went for cycling through the forest. Saw amazing plants.

Nairobi is not renowned for being relaxed and peaceful but Karura Forest whilst not in the centre is not far from it ofers acres of freedom putting you miles from mayhem. Miles of well signposted tracks offers walking, jogging or cycling, (available to hire) The highlight is the waterfall unfortunately I ca't recommend the access to this for the disabled.... More

Its only about 20 mins drive from the city without traffic. Once you get passed the gate, nature awaits you like your own big garden. Its huge and you need a plan, probably much better if you cycle, that way you exercise and do not get tired fast. Great for hikes, team builds, picnics, meditation (if thats your thing), there...
