“In the Shadow of Giants” safari trip with Capture Africa was possibly the best and most exciting trip of my life. We visited elephant orphanages and reintegration centers in Kenya’s national parks and really got up close and personal with the “ellies.” I felt very safe and looked after by our guides while stopping in luxurious camps along the way. (See photo.) Home-cooked meals with exquisite fruits and vegetables were a special treat. I’d travel with these folks anywhere.

Jambo Adrienne, Thank you so much for taking the time to put your review together and up on TA! WE are all very happy about you feeling safe and secure with us...one of our top priorities is making sure people are at ease and have nothing to worry about on the trip you signed up for. The food that gets served at all the SWT locations is never bad and it's always nice to be waited on...most people do not want to go home after eating the meals served up daily for our groups by the SWT staff at all the lodges and camps. Also thank you for posting some of your images which gives us and the viewer of your review what you saw on your trip. We were on the same tour with the previous two reviewers and can reaffirm everything they have said. We booked after reading all of the five-star reviews here and yet the tour exceeded our expectations! Dick Berry provided much useful information in advance and responded quickly and reassuringly to email queries. Our driver/guides Henry Gathura and Patrick Mwangi Ndogono were informative, funny, patient, warm, and flexible. The staff (outnumbering our group) came out to meet us and to say farewell at each of the Sheldrick properties; they were helpful and friendly throughout. It was definitely not "business as usual". The keepers at the Sheldrick nursery and reintegration units were also personable and gave detailed, insightful responses to questions as we walked among the elephants and interacted with them. Despite the logistical challenges caused by the heavy rains, we had some amazing experiences. We're definitely contemplating another booking.

Hello Sprezzaturist, Thank you so much for your review...it's greatly appreciated! Yes you did encounter much rain in January which is VERY unusual and predicting the weather is not as easy as it use to be. The staff at all the reintegration units appreciate every group that comes and do not take your visits for granted. We are also delighted to hear that you may return to Kenya and look forward to the next journey with you. Thank you again for taking the time to review your trip with Capture Africa Tours. This has been a trip in my dreams ever since I fell in love with elephants and found the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust who do the most amazing job for elephants and wildlife in Kenya. We finally were able to make this dream a reality and returned from' In The Shadow of Giants 'Tour a week ago.My husband joined me and fell in love with elephants also! The trip far exceeded my expectations and my heart is full from all the emotions I experienced in actually seeing the Sheldrick Orphans on their journey from tragedy to happiness living fully wild lives again. More than that we fully realised the incredible nature of the keepers and their gentle natures and how they forge lifetime bonds with their 'babies'. Meeting them and witnessing this was very inspiring. Our guides Henry and Patrick were awesome. Knowledgeable, funny, warm and extremely caring they looked after us all so well from start to finish. This was an unusually rainy January (it should have been dry and hot) and they had challenges to overcome such as waterlogged tracks and roads, difficulties in spotting wildlife in Amboseli, (only due to the lushness of the undergrowth )and yet they made every day a really great day . The accommodation throughout the trip was stunning, in particular the Ithumba Hill Camp and the Galdessa Camp. The hotel in Nairobi has every amenity and is very comfortable. While this trip was weighted towards the Sheldrick elephants we also stayed in beautiful Amboseli park, spotting Mount Kilimanjaro, wild elephant herds, hyena cubs and stunning birdlife. The animals were luxuriating in the ample food and water available and that was a joy to witness. Seeing my foster elephants in real life was a privilege beyond belief and I cannot imagine a better company to do this with. Capture Africa Tours run by Dick Berry and his Kenyan partner Henry is fantastic. I can only hope we can return and see other parts of Kenya as well as revisiting our elephant orphans with this great organisation.

Jambo Maddy, We appreciate the time and effort that goes into putting your memory into gear and writing a review after a long trip home...and while it is still fresh in your mind. Having people on our trips that are truly passionate about elephants and African wildlife makes all the difference in the world. Thank you as well for your comments regarding our guides and my partner Henry because without them the success of Capture Africa Tours would not be possible. Just returned a couple of days ago from In the Shadow of Giants Tour. A truly amazing trip. Got so close to the elephants, which was amazing. Have been sponsoring elephants with the Sheldrick Trust for 30 years, so was a dream come true. I was a nervous solo traveller, but need not have worried as felt very safe and taken care of. Cannot recommend Capture Africa Tours highly enough, from the emails and information given before the trip by Dick Berry, to Patrick and Henry, our lovely drivers/guides while in Kenya. Already considering a return trip next year.

I joined a group organized by Capture Africa Tours as a solo adventurer to visit my orphan eles in the Foster and Orphan elephant tour in Sept 2019. It is an absolutely wonderful experience and made more so with the care and attention from Dick Berry, the owner, his wife Julie, Patrick Ndogono, our superb guide, Henry Gathura, the head guide and Godfrey Mathega, my Nairobi day guide and driver. Everything was seamless from my first exploratory emails to my arrival back home. Dick even ensured our Kenya visa process would be less arduous with a detailed email regarding the process. I was awaited upon arrival by Patrick who safely deposited me to Eka Hotel. The hotel is comfortable and convenient as a base hotel in Nairobi owing to proximity to NBO airport. I was met promptly by Godfrey the following day for my day trip to Nairobi. Henry even contacted Godfrey from the field to check on us. I spent an enjoyable day at Museum with a museum guide and also watched the cultural show at the Bomas after lunch there. The following day we started on the official Ele tour. Travel is in a comfortable Toyota Land cruiser equipped for safari with a pop up roof and charging capabilities for our cameras. The group size is limited so we actually had extra seats and our easygoing group decided spontaneously to rotate seats. There is a cooler and we had ample access to bottled water and soda. The experience with the eles in all units (Nairobi nursery, Ithumba , Voi, and Umani springs is heartwarming and magical. It is a wonder to observe these physically and emotionally wounded orphans emerge and grow into seemingly happy and resilient creatures preparing for integration and for some already returned to the wild life that is their birth right. And how is this made so? It is possible with the utter devotion of the dedicated keepers and the Sheldrick Wildlife trust. It was a privilege for me to be allowed to interact with these eles and an equal privilege to meet their carers. It instills in oneself that in the midst of tragedy there is hope of a positive outlook for these poor orphans. Memorable experiences amongst many include seeing Lili, the new wildborn baby visiting Ithumba, watching a big group of enormous adult bulls at the water hole in Ithumba during the witching hour with the most beautiful pink dusk light, very close interaction with the ever polite Jotto and affectionate Ndotto, and the whole of Umani Springs stay. Yes, Patrick was right, if I had to choose and it is a very difficult choice, Umani springs is my favorite experience because of the indepth experience with a few very special elephants who are most physically compromised of all and yet proving resilient with the nurturing of the endearing Umani keepers headed by Philip Okonde. Special mention to Patrick and Benjamin, Ithumba headkeeper who arranged to let us see Lili when she visited on our last morning in Ithumba. Ithumba hill and Umani Springs lodge are absolutely fabulous. The food was delicious and the staff were all so attentive to our needs. We all felt we could have stayed a day or more in each place. And that is why with this amazing experience arranged by CaptureAfrica, I am in planning stages to return the following year with other kindred spirits who adore elephants. As I wrote at the start of this review, this is an absolutely wonderful experience and Capture Africa will ensure that it is so! Capture Africa is a singularly outstanding tour company. Thank you to Dick and his staff at Capture Africa, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the dedicated keepers. Asante sana! Isabel (aka Maria during tour to distinguish me from Isabel from France)
