As part of our cruise itinerary (SS Sudan), we were taken by a Felucca (traditional sail boat) to Isla Kitchener. So many of the plants back in the day were imported from my country India (yay!). It reminded us of Singapore Botanical Gardens. Had a good hour and a half walking around it on the bank of the Nile.

Our family travels regulary (since 5 years) in the winter time to Aswan,
to savour the Nile and its picturescue landscape. A tour with a
traditional felucca (sailing boat) is, in our opinion, one of the most
beautiful thing to do in Aswan. On the felucca you ride leisurely down
the Nile, while the Nile Islands and sand dunes are passing by you can
enjoy the Peace far from the hectical European Citys. Now and then you
leave the felucca to visit old tombs, the botanical garden of Kitcheners
Island or the Cloistre of Simeon in the desert. The time on a felucca
tour is different because you align to the rythm of the Nile.

The highlight is a day trip to the 1^st Cataract, where you reach behind
the rapids unknown touristy area with Nubian villages and a bathing
place. Here is the nature still intact, the Nile clean, the sand dunes
and the green, copius Nile Islands with their biota espescially
beautiful. If you want to, you can go bathing on the Nile beach or visit
a Nubian village.

Important for the 1^st Cataract trip is a experienced and trusted
captain who can ride the rapids securely. The felucca should be therefor
in a good codition, because the 1^st Cataract isn´t that untroubled, its
very deep and you can be pulled down by the vortexes. For the tour is
enough wind nessesary, what you should remind for your planning.
Furthermore you should take enough water and sunscreen with you.

We already made tours with unexperienced captains who couldn´t ride the
1^st Cataract which came into dangerous sloping positions with the
felucca and turned over with the comment, that there isn´t anything
interesting upwards the Nile and that the 1^st Cataract is much more
behind (what was wrong). A very good captian is Abdullah, you can rent
his felucca at the waterfront (Coniche) in Aswan right across from
Elephantine Island for a very fair price (just ask for the boat/felucca
„Admacum“ of Abdullah Abu Zaid). He is a very calm, discreet and
experienced captain, with him, we made some nice Nile trips to, for
tourists, unknown places and can really recommend. His felucca was very
clean and well-kept.

To discover Aswan with the felucca – one of the best things to do on a
holiday in Egypt. We already look forward to our next holiday.

I sailed to Kirchner's Island via Felucca.
It was a nice experience tacking back
and forth with the wind along with the
other Feluccas.

The Botanical garden could use with better signage. It is a good stroll however unless you are a plant enthusiast,it is not really for solo travellers.

"El Nabatat Island" or "Kitchener Island" is small, oval-shaped island in the Nile at Aswan. It is less than a kilometer long and its width is less than ½ a kilometer. The Aswan Botanical Garden is located on the island.
The collection was begun by Lord Kitchener and cared for since. The gardens  are popular among the local people and tourists, as a place to go for a quiet afternoon away from the noise of the city, and for weekend picnics. The island and gardens can be reached by Felucca that reach the Southeastern side of the small island. From there you walk through the gardens (but of faded glory from the original nature and thought construction) past high palm trees which give shade.

Kitchener rapidly transformed the small 750 metres (2,460 ft) long island into a paradise of exotic trees, many from India, and plants in gardens with view walkways.

Facilities such as toilets are ok. Cafe situated near the market. Exit down the stairs to a falucca!

Kitchner's island is a botanical paradise with numerous trees brought and planted from across the globe. There is very little signage or description of the flora which leads to guesswork and estimation of their names/purpose. The atmosphere during our visit was spoiled by crowds of young rowdy locals. There's a decent cafeteria near the boat quay serving basics. Nothing special about the island per se.

Kitchener's Island is reached by felucca from Aswan, about a ten minute ride. The island was once home to British General Horatio Kitchener, who was given the island after his successful campaigns in Sudan. His love of flowering plants and palms is evident from the plantings that have become Aswan's botanical gardens.

The far end of the island has a mosque, snack bar, and cafe where you can smoke shisha and take coffee, tea, or soft drinks. It's at this end that you take another felucca back. You should negotiate a ride for about 25 Egyptian pounds or just under five dollars U.S.

The island is delightfully green and offers a nice view of Elephantine Island, the Mausoleum of the Aga Khan, and the Tombs of the Nobles. You should plan to spend a little over an hour here.

A wonderful place, not only botanically speaking but for a relaxing and unwinding hour or two. Heavenly greenery coupled with the Nile flowing slowly past, makes for an unforgettable visit. Lord Kitchener... well done indeed!!!

We were on a Nile cruise ship and we had a free day at Aswan and decided to visit Kitcheners Island. We had visited this place in previous years but a couple who we met on the cruise ship wanted to go there when we told them how nice it was there. There was some Felucca's moored next to our cruise ship and we approached a skipper of one of these sailing boats and agreed on £40.00 for him to sail us up to the island and drop us off at one end and then he will sail round to the other end of the island and wait for us while we walk through the length of the island. There are four paths running the length of the island and all of them offer beutiful views of the Nile and all of the wonderful tree's and exotic plants on show. At the far end of the island, there is a nice cafe where you can enjoy a real cup of tea with real tea leaves before you get back on board your Felucca for the ride back to your cruise ship. Allow three hours for the whole trip. Do not miss out on doing this self organised trip. You will not regret it and I guarantee that you will do it again should you pass this way again, just like we have.

This review is quite late. After leaving Elephantine Island our felucca brought us to the Aswan Botanical Gardens located at Kitchener's Island. We were pleasantly surprised to see different species of exotic trees and rare plants. Palm trees rise on both sides of the paved walkway; the huge century old trees provided the much needed shade at the middle of the day. There were yellow painted wooden benches and trash bins scattered around the area. We enjoyed the limited time exploring the gardens and taking photos. We could have opted to stay longer had we done the trip independently.
