I had read about Townhouse Gallery in the New York Times and put it on my list when visiting Cairo in January. It was a highlight of my trip, which included all the wonderful things Egypt offers. Townhouse is not a chilly white box gallery. The gallery is full of life. It includes a large exhibition space that was showing a fascinating exhibition that took two visits to take in. There are also works of art from artists around the region that are for sale. The work is often very good and the prices are very low, reflecting the market here. I purchased works by three artists, including by the gallery manager Mina Noshy, the gallery's charming ambassador and an inspired artist in his own right. There was plenty of help available for any questions and on making a purchase (but no pressure). There's also an arts and crafts area with wonderful handmade jewelry and other things that make great souvenirs and gifts, all of a quality that I didn't see anywhere else. How to get here? I had my hotel arrange a car, which took me to the gallery; the driver waited, drinking a coffee at the outdoor cafe in front of the gallery, then too me back to my hotel. The gallery is near the Egyptian Museum and the area is perfectly safe. You could actually walk over if you have a good map, although people will likely approach you to come to their shops. I'd skip that. If you do go by a car, have the driver take you right to the gallery's front door.

The story behind this gallery is inspirational ... They brought the power of art to a blue collar neighbourhood, involving the locals in their efforts, provided a show space to new artists struggling to be seen and heard, fought off a bureaucracy that fears change... And so much more. Off the beaten track, discover a piece of Cairo tour guides won 't show you.

Recommend if you want to buy small gifts to take and or interesting affordable art. Nice to avoid the khan el Khalili atmosphere and casually browse. They also hold art workshops for kids in the community.

absolutely loved the Amgard Naguib exhibition currently on display and will have to return as there is so much detail and needs time - wonderfully curated and delighted with the guidance of staff, especially Karim - thank you for majorly contributing to keeping Cairo vibrant - exhibition is free to enter and the whole area is historical and quaint and exciting - vintage memorabilia of Egypt

You like contemporary? Then go there. Yes, the area is not that spectacular. But the gallery wows me every time. Like and dislike in art is also a matter of taste. Decide for yourself.

The townhouse gallery is tucked away in an alleyway in downtown Cairo off Marouf Street.
There's little signage and any guides to the welcomed and unexpected art space. It's worth visiting to see local Egyptian artists who are desperate for venues. The little adjoining store is not too great. The storekeeper managed to convince me to buy a terrible CD for fifty pounds.

I am based in Cairo for what ends up adding up to several months out of the year and have found myself pining for the museums and other cultural events which I left behind in my hometown of Washington,DC. Once grounded in my flat, new office and after meeting a few locally based friends, I was introduced to the alternative art scene in Cairo by a mid-week evening trip to Townhouse Gallery in downtown Cairo. I do not recall the specific title of the exhibition we were meant to see, however I was amazed at the building and it's surroundings, it felt as though I had been transported to an artist's commune within NYC or somewhere in Europe. Very impressed with what the collective or owners have done with the place considering the political situation in Cairo and Egypt as a whole is not the most open and free space for artists or those with creative energy. Will definitely consider this place as one of my favourite places in Cairo and Egypt overall, and may even ask on how I can become a benefactor of Townhouse and it's endeavors in the future.

In a safe area, can take uber or taxi from hotel. It has two areas - one on street with jewelry, food plates, bags, postcards and art work. Then there is another gallery they have they will take you too if you want to see more art.
