Every now and then, one does discover new gems in Cairo. The most recent one I stumbled upon during my visit in April is the “Oum El Dounia Gallery” a boutique and Souvenir shop in the district of Maadi, Cairo with its main branch in down town Cairo. I had just heard about the gallery from a friend, so I was surprised to learn that the gallery has been there for quite some time.

The gallery is owned by a French couple who came to Cairo over 20 years ago. As I enter the gallery a friendly gentleman ushers me in. In a couple of minutes another came with a glass of chilled “Karkadee”, which I welcomed as it was near 35 C on the street. I started walking around. There is an exceptionally tasteful selection of stylish local craft and souvenirs. Unlike places such as “Khan Al Khalili”, the gallery offers typical modern day, locally made Egyptian crafts and more. The way the products are exhibited in the gallery, gives you the impression that you just stumbled on an open treasure chest. Glassware, ceramics, Jewelry, home accents and unique souvenirs are exhibited. Cotton clothes, bed covers, pillows with interesting modern Egyptian designs and pictures are displayed in different sections. There is also a section for books on Egypt [mostly in French] from ancient times to the modern era, written by Egyptian and French writers. The whole place reminded me of American and European museum gift shops, in particular some of the famous gift shops of Buenos Aires great museums.

I talked a bit with the staff and understood that the main branch of this gallery is down town Cairo on “Talaat Harb Street”, which I did not hear about either. I left promising to come back with my wife. I did bring my wife, to this and to the main branch of the gallery in Cairo. You may be interested to learn that we did much of our shopping at “Oum El Dounia”.

I hope you will have time to check out this gem, in either location. I think you will be impressed like I am. I must add that the gallery is a bit pricy, but is worth it.

Enjoy your visit to Oum El Dounia!

An Egyptian friend recommended this place when I was looking for a wall decoration (khamimeya).

The address is 3 Talaat Harb right off Tahrir up a couple of flights of stairs. I walked by the entrance twice before someone pointed me the right way.

I found my wall decoration and much more, among other things a gorgeous bed spread, candle holder, a book on revolution graffiti. It isn't cheap but there is no bargaining and no pressure. I was given a cold karkade juice when I came in.

It was a Friday around 6pm on the day of mms major holiday, but I was the only customer in the store.

A great place to shop for yourself or others.

Tried to find the store in Maadi and could not find the place. We called the listed phone numbers and the Maadi listing and there was no answer. Whoever answered the downtown store phone number said it was a wrong number. Hopefully the store actually exists ... would have liked to visited the stores considering the Maadi location is a road away from my office.

It's hard to find Egyptian-made products in Egypt. They buy from China just like everyone else, so it's fun to find a store where everything is made by locals. Wonderful selection of housewares, fabrics (really beautiful selection), glassware, books and clothing. Fantastic place to buy gifts. Everything is priced, so there is no bargaining necessary and the prices are pretty good. Fun find!

Lovely store to buy local and handmade Egyptian products. The products they sell are of good quality and have reasonable prices. There is another branch close to Tahrir Square. I always go there for presents.

Been here many times and everything I find something new. Prices are almost the same as in the streets, but here you will find better quality and different products from all over Egypt. Go there around Christmas!
