Neighborhood: Myeongdong / Namdaemun
Arguably Seoul’s most famous neighborhood and undoubtedly one of its most popular, Myeongdong takes shopping and eating to new heights, with hundreds of shops, restaurants, and cafes all stacked on top of one another. The rise in popularity of Korean cosmetics, fashion, and more has made this area a must-see for visitors who come and marvel at Myeongdong’s often frenetic pace and energy. Lotte and Shinsaegae’s massive department stores are also popular draws for both Korean and luxury products. The department stores, just like Myeongdong’s streets, are crowded around the clock. Myeongdong’s many street food carts are also immensely popular for their inexpensive and quirky offerings (French-fry-encrusted corn dogs, anyone?). The neighborhood’s popularity, as well as its close proximity to other popular sights and neighborhoods, makes it one of Seoul’s most popular places to stay.

The Goguan Hanbok Photo Studio gives you a great opportunity to take home memories of you wearing the Korean traditional clothes without worrying about the weather, the outdoor tourist crowd and the photo bombers.

They accept both reservations and walk-in guests, so plan your visit. Don't go during the weekends and peak hours.

1. YOUR MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLE IS ESSENTIAL.

To achieve a more convincing Korean look, let the studio's makeup artists do their magic. If you have extra budget, get the photo package which includes hair and makeup.

You can also accessorize but make sure you know which ones are for ladies and for men.

If you prefer to save and do your own makeup, the studio provides a well-lit corner for you. Watch some Korean makeup tutorials to inspire you.

2. PLAN YOUR POSES.

If you avail of the package that includes a professional photographer, you're only given 2 poses or backdrops. You will have multiple raw shots in your CD but will only have 2 different positions.

The photographers move quickly so let them know at the start if you already have something in mind. If you have no idea what to do, just go with the flow, they will guide you.

There is a staircase that leads you up into their selfie areas. You have all the time to take your own shots here. Bring your selfie sticks and tripods!

Each corner has its own theme, so be ready to have different poses to keep your photos interesting. Look out for pose recommendations printed on black stickers found on each booth.

3. GO CRAZY AND CREATIVE IN THE SELFIE BOOTHS.

Whether visiting alone or with a friend, don't be shy. It may be crowded at certain times, but everyone would be busy taking the perfect shot. Don't be too self-conscious.

Loosen up, feel the moment and be wacky sometimes. Still be mindful of others who are next in line for that corner.

ITINERARY RECOMMENDATION
If there was a next time, I would do this photo shoot first thing in the morning then visit the palaces or folk villages which offer Hanbok rentals.

This way, I already have full makeup and hairstyle on. I'd have my indoor shoot in the morning then in the afternoon another outdoor/scenery pictorial with a rented Hanbok.

FOOTNOTE TIP
If you're a dedicated selfie-ist, this activity can tire you out. Come to the studio on a full stomach!

My family of 5 went to take Hanbok pictures. They had a great selection and Such amazing little scenes and spaces to take your own photos - each area was wonderfully decorated and the lighting was set perfectly. My three boys had a blast with the swords! They do a great job with makeup and hair and we were really pleased with the professional photos too! They gave a complimentary cd and some wallets as well. It was nicely air conditioned in there - which I was so glad we were sweating in our hanboks which made the whole experience even better. The photos were done quickly after we had lunch we could pick them up. It's in a busy and popular shopping area and we had trouble finding the doorway that goes upstairs- make sure you look up because there is a huge photo sign advertising the place but we missed that and walked back and forth several times. We booked through Trazy.com and had a great experience! Would highly recommend. Only thing was family package is for 3 people and so we bought a couple package to go with it - we didn't know we could have added on people to the family package because it didn't say on Trazy but it was worth the money!

I came in April 2016 (Spring). You can come without booking, but I suggest you do in case they get busy. I came an hour early, they still accommodated me. They have quite a bit of choices (more or less 20 per type of Hanbok -Queen, ordinary citizen, and Gisaeng). You can check their website online to see the prices.

I suggest you have your hair and make-up to be done by them. They do it really well. Photos turned out so good. It doesn't take too long for them to do your hair and make up too.

Choose a package where you can get a cd copy of the photos.

After the photoshoot, which only takes a few minutes, they would tell you to go upstairs for the "selfie area", you can borrow a selfie stick. The area is well lit, really appropriate for photoshoots. You can stay as long as you want.

We book from their web, Since we study the package, everything went so fast. The pro photo ends very good, my wive love it. Beware if you are 6' tall or above, you might hit your head or hat on the ceiling.

This store is for those with a sense of humor & seeking something a little different to do in Korea. It was a lot of fun dressing up in traditional Korean clothes & getting family pictures made. The people there did a fabulous job with the make-up & hair for the girls. Be prepared though when you walk in - it's a lot busier than we thought & the facility is a typical Asian sized shop. That is, it's not built to accommodate large foreigners (I bumped my head more times than I can count)...it'll be a bit cramped, very crowded, very busy, but a lot of fun.

I've heard some people complain about the add-on's in the packages & lackluster support from the staff. We're probably a little jaded as travelers in Asia, so we didn't notice much difference. The staff didn't speak more English than we did Korean, but they did a great job of moving everyone through efficiently despite the crowd. The staff answered our questions & got us through, but everyone is literally trying to take care of 3-4 people at once. The pictures turned out fabulous & we were able to take plenty of our own candid shots upstairs after the formal shoot. The family went into this thinking it was going to be a drag, and left laughing & happy after two hours of fun. Just be patient & enjoy the ride.

Stumbled upon this studio when we entered the shopping district Myeongdeong and gavd it a try. I think the price per person starts at $20 but we ended up paying $130 for the two of us, lol.

We paid for the most expensive costumes, which was the Imperial Wedding. Plus we got the couple shots with photographer and also a burnt CD with all the pictures.

The make up to my wife was done pretty well in a short time. They had tons of costumes at their disposal.

The photographer was very professional and skilled. She knew how to direct for the positions, told us where to look, how to look, which angle and everything. Her editing skills were stunning too! Very, very happy with the edited pictures.

There were a lot of settings upstairs where you can do selfies yourself and there were example pictures at each setting so you were able to recreate them yourselfes with your camera / smartphone.

All i all it was a good experience and a great souvenir to bring from South Korea.

It was not a great start when we were told that the package listed on their website was not updated (and hence included less items). There's no point arguing and spoiling our holiday so we went on with it...

Brushing that aside, we had a great time choosing the costumes, watching the makeup, laughing at each other's look, etc.

After the professional photography session, we were given selfie sticks to go up to the next floor to take our own photos. There were many separate mock-up scenes for selfies and we spent a good time there. The prints were ready by the time we went down to change and return the costumes.

Overall great experience and highly recommended! Check and confirm the list of items included in the package!

I loved !! I highly recommend it !! I tested it myself with an outfit and an hairstyle of the style "artist", coiffed and made up by the team of the studio, and then go into the many decorations, to take a picture with a perch, They lent me. And this, after having been photographed by a professional photographer in another setting. The whole for 68 000 won (57 euros approximately). You can have all this for 60,000 won (50 euros) with a dress and a normal hairstyle. Prices range from 20,000 won (17 euros, 1 single dress + Selfie) to 180,000 won (150 euros 3 dresses + Hairstyle + Makeup + Selfie + 10 standard size photographs taken by a professional photographer + 1 Photo paper of Size posters taken by a professional photographer + 6 pocket size photos taken by a professional photographer + all photos taken by a professional photographer on a CD.). I strongly recommend you to get your makeup and hair done as it makes your experience very profitable (in addition, it's cheap). The selfies could be enough (in addition, you stay the time you want !!) but the photos by the professional photographer are still to be taken if you have the means. They also know how to do it and it gives a wonderful rendering.
Only negatives: It is true that it is a little bit rush. Especially to pay before starting all the procedure. And it is true that some of us would have liked to choose the photos taken by the professional photographer (it is she who chose them for you).
But do not hesitate !!

Come here for the ultimate hanbok experience! I had made a reservation online prior to going, and when we got there on a Monday morning (10am), there were already two other groups there. Go early if you want first dibs on the hanbok and be quick when you see something you like. An older lady grabbed a hanbok I was eyeing before I had the chance to take it, and so I had to choose another one. I did my own make-up at the hotel (I didn't want the kids to wait) but did get my hair done by one of the ladies (which took less than 5 minutes). The dress fitting for the 4 of us (2 adults, 2 kids) took around 10-15 minutes. Since there was a line-up to take the professional photos, we went upstairs to take photos ourselves. I was impressed by the variety of scenes available. We were the only ones taking photos upstairs around 10:30am- it was tons of fun!!! Lots of happy memories were made. We spent around 30-45 minutes on our own before going back downstairs for our professional photos. The photos took around 30 minutes to be printed. We didn't get to choose which photo- they did, but we were satisfied with it! A few things to note:
1) If you can, make online reservations first so they know to expect you. The process (including payment) will go so much smoother and faster.
2) They speak limited English but they can speak Mandarin (and of course, Korean).
3) Don't expect exceptional service. They weren't the most hospitable but then again, you're here to take photos, and there's a language barrier (at least for me- they ended up speaking to me in Mandarin).
4) Remember to take a map or have Google map ready. We took the taxi and he dropped us off on a main street at Myeong Dong. Really grateful to the lady who helped show us where we needed to go. We had a map (not Google map) but it was all in Korean.
5) If you don't usually wear make-up or don't know how to put it on, then have them make you up. Otherwise, I think you can put make-up on yourself, save time (and money) and still look decent! There's also a vanity counter to remove your make-up and freshen up afterwards.
6) The kids' hanbok/ costumes were really cute, too! They gave us 2-3 to choose from for each child.
7) For certain hanboks and hairstyles, there is an additional fee. They do take credit card payment though so it's very convenient.
8) Try to go early in the morning or around dinner time to avoid the crowds! It was selfie galore upstairs when we were the only ones there!!! All in all, a great experience- fun for the whole family!!!

bookings were unnecessary because they took everyone who happened to walk in any time of the day. too many people to do the photo shoot comfortably, and same poses for everyone and every couple. they gave us photos they chose for us, we had no say.
