Reportedly, Seoul's richest people mainly live in Gangnam and the Greater Gangnam areas.
But there must also be some pretty wealthy people living in the Samcheongdong area, because when we walked through, I saw the biggest Mercedes and the biggest BMW I’ve ever come across (and I’ve been to Germany plenty of times).
The street here is lovely with low houses, clean sidewalks, and a plethora of galleries and cafes. Definitely worth a visit - maybe after the obligatory trip to the boring Gyeongbokgung Palace, which is just a few hundred meters away.

You can explore the boutiques, shops and galleries to or on your way back from Bakchon Village. Certainly a great place to take a break or have a meal at one of the many restaurant offerings. Interesting stores that offer traditional Korean hanbok rentals for those who want to take advantage of photo ops while visiting Bakchon Village. Overall, just a great place to wander and observe Korean culture.

This road is not far from the Gyeongbokgung Palace. It is continuing until Insadong. Along the road it is possible to find many interesting shops, art galleries, restaurants and cafes. Also, generally it is possible to see some street activities or market places. Prices in shops and in restaurants are above the average level of Seoul. Walking along this road can be quite enjoyable activity on a warm day.

You can start your journey way before getting to Samcheong-dong. This is a beautiful walk. Start from the top of Insadong-gil. Actually just follow the crowds. Cross the main street Yulgok-ro and enter what looks like a private drive. It actually is not, rather a street. You will see many people and students walk into this street. There is not much initially, you pass a huge school and concrete and brink walls. Eventually you will start to see flower shops, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. keep walking and at the intersection, a library on your right, cross over and take a left at the Khiel's follow the road to the left and observe the old small korean homes some converted to galleries, bars, restaurants and coffee shops and lot of specialty shops. Keep walking to the end. You will pass a étude cosmetic shop. At the main street, turn right and again observe the shops, restaurants especially those built up the side of the mountain, that will be on your right hand side. If you walk far enough and you reach the Starbucks built in a ultra modern building, you can cross the street and walk back on the opposite side of the street. Throughout all this walk you will see interesting sights and culture and history. Remember at the Bene coffee shop take a left to walk back up the same direction. Down one of the side streets on your right, is a sandwich/tart/dessert shop. It is called Retrona Pies. It is worth a stop for a drink and delicious sandwich, not to mention the luscious the pies and cakes. From there you can continue back until you reach Insadong again. You may be visiting some specialty shops that hit your fancy or stop for a coffee tea or lunch. I think you will enjoy this walk, a different break from the palaces, temples and high rise building.

EXCELLENT shopping areas. The surroundings are like in old-fashioned houses but when you stepped into the shops, WOW! All high-end interior. Very comfortable to shop and pleasant to look around. We enjoyed our time here! Prices may be a little steep but its a really great place to hop around!

I wandered here after visiting Gyeongbokgung Place and the National Folk Museum of Korea. Definitely like this place more than Insadong (a lot more commercialised). The street is known to be a café street with lots of hanoks converted into hip café joints.
I was definitely hungry by the time I arrived this area. It was a toss between a late lunch or early tea at the café. My first stop was at The Restaurant. Then I realised it was too late for lunch, as the main restaurant will only start operations at 6pm. They run a café downstairs. The afternoon tea set menu didn't quite appeal......So I left & walked onto the main drag......
Lo & behold : I saw Isaac, the famous sandwich chain. Takeaway sandwich for lunch in early winter? No way. I was fortuitous enough to spot the pop-up Bukchon Information Center. By now, I could eat an elephant. A warm hearty Korean meal. And it has to be a short walking distance. Ended at Cheongsujeong (House #91, 5 mins away).
It sweetened my visit. After the meal, it was fun to walk around, scaled the steps to go closer to the hanoks and have an ariel view. Also ended up at Samcheong Park to watch the sunset.
On the way back from the park, I stopped by a makeshift stall in the area, selling Bungeoppang 붕어빵 (crispy fish-shaped bread with red bean filling)....it was soooo gooooood!!

Samcheongdong-gil road is not big road. However, there are many attractive various flavor of small restaurants, coffee/dessert cafes and nice wine bars. Visitors can experience old Korean local houses of medium level of gently class.
There is a nice small hiking trail starting from Samcheong park (the north end of Samchedongdong-gil) which leads to Daehakro-road, another tourist attraction road famous for various local play and music theaters. The trail hiking takes about 30-40 minutes along the old castle wall of the last dynasty.

dotted with eclectic little shops and cafes, this street is a delight to wander. If you veer off to the right up the mountain, towards the embassy of Vietnam, you will find the entrance to the Samcheong Park. Go in and climb up the hill to the pavillon, past the military fortress, and you will be rewarded with great views of Seoul. In the morning you will stop believing you are near a mega city.

Samcheongdong is located on higher ground at the foothills of Seoul's Bukhansan (northern mountains). It used to be full of traditional Korean houses or hanoks but many of the owners have either sold or leased out their premises so the area has developed into a charming district of hanoks interspersed with contemporary low rise buildings with many cafés and restaurants, art galleries and private/mini museums and artisanal shops. The Korean Prime Minister's residence is located along Samcheongdong 7-gil (street). While Garosugil in Sinsadong, Gangnam is primarily a commercialized shopping street dotted with a handful of cafés, I prefer the laid back vibe of Samcheongdong with its electic mix of private hanok dwellings and small enterprise. There are more cafés than shops in Samcheongdong. One heads to Garosugil to shop but Samcheongdong is the place to go cafe-hopping. The nearest subway station is Anguk Station on the orange line.

I loved exploring Samcheongdong-gil Road. Saw really nice cafes/restaurants. Boutiques/shope selling for socks/scarves/shades/caps/dresses/skincare products etc. A few were at very good prices.
I was there mostly to take photos; the narrow roads, the trees, the people, the buildings/houses with traditional Korean architecture - beautiful! And just being there was a nice experience. It's nothing like the metropolis Seoul but it's there. The quaintness is what makes this street a must-visit. I got lost a few times but the 'walking-information-centre' helped me twice to find my way. A must visit indeed!

hi, how to go samcheongdong from bukchon hanok village? is that walk posible?
Written December 27, 2014
Hi there, you may wish to take a copy of the map at the Tourist Information Centre near the start of the walk to Bukchon Hanok Village. This is located about 1 block ahead from exit 2 of Anguk Station (subway line 3). The map that they have there states very clearly on how to get to Samcheong dong.
