Neighborhood: Hongdae
Carefree enthusiasm is everywhere in this energetic neighborhood centered on Hongik University, Korea’s top art school. From its assortment of murals to the occasional amateur street performances, creativity and expression make up the wild and beating heart of vibrant Hongdae. At the Free and Hope Market (weekends at the Hongdae Children’s Playground) you'll find one of Seoul’s most popular handmade and creative markets drawing consistent crowds. At Hongdae, there’s never a shortage of things to do and see; food and drink options are nearly endless as are shops and noraebang (karaoke) rooms. Hongdae is also one of Seoul’s top party and club scenes catering to a younger demographic; if a packed club isn’t your scene, you'll also find a range of music venues and bars offering live music in all genres. Although Hongdae has lost much of its unique appeal and undergone rapid commercialization in recent years, be sure to explore Hongdae’s edges in areas such as Sangsu-dong and Yeonnam-dong where Hongdae’s fiercely independent streak still runs freely.
How to get there
  • Hongik University • 7 min walk

having gone to the different Jimjimbangs in Seoul. Happy day Spa is not too bad. Simple and still relatively local (which was pleasant).
The only thing and reason why I decided to write the review is to say that when you are locating this spa. Suggest that you look for Marigold Hotel (Hongik University, Line 2, exit 9), and once you get to face side of the hotel. The spa is towards the basement on the left side of the hotel entrance. That is because when our taxi driver key into his GPS and brought us to the location, we will dropped at the back of the hotel at a public carpark, and it was rather confusing.

I decided to write this review because the last review is from 2012...
The place does still exist and now the sign on the front of the building is in English and it actually says "Happy day spa", so it is very easy to find. And it is perfect for a rainy lazy day.

I went there during the day on a Monday. Not many people around but a group of noisy teenagers arrived at some point and I did not manage to get any rest until they left. I did not use the sauna in the women changing room. But the hot rooms in the jimjilbang are great and also the icy room there. I was unlucky and the masseuse was on vacation that day. As for the food, I did not try it, but I would say it is typical Korean food.

People do not speak English in general. The lady at the front desk could understand some and it was really useful, but there is pretty much no assistance once you are inside.

The entrance fee is 9,000 KRW for the jimjilbang. Massages starting at 30,000. They accept credit card only at the main entrance.

Do not expect a fancy place, but it is a good place for relaxing.

If you are looking for a little of everything this is the place to go. Once you step into the locker room (mens and women's separate) your adventure begins. You will change into the short set they provide for you when you leave the women's area. If you choose to visit the spa's you better not be shy. Everyone is naked. My daughter and I did the body scrub and massage. All we could do is laugh. The "massage therapist" rub every part of your body, yes every part with a abrasive mitt. You only hope you have skin when you are done. Then they send you to shower before the massage. We returned back to the massage for our full body massage. I glanced over at my daughter who started her massage first only to see the woman walking on her back. I laughed until my lady stepped on my back then breathing was almost not a option.
We then met my husband and son in the main lobby where we made our way to the ice room, and several of the other rooms that are available.
It was a experience that we laugh at and really enjoyed.

I stayed happy day spa 2 times November 2017.
I paid by credit card and I did not get receipt at 2nd time.
When I came back to my country and check how much I paid,
I paid double price which I paid at first time.
So be careful.
You should always ask to get receipt.

I've stayed in a few jimjilbangs (sleeping rooms) in korea as they are usually cheap under $10. For this you change into robes and leave your stuff in a locker. There are showers and spas seperated by genders. The sleeping halls are either communal for families/couples or seperated by genders.
My issues with this places is that its underground so not really any proper way to vent all the heat generated so its quite hot. You need to keep a water bottle with you.
Also its crowded and people were coming late, chatting, and having a party. Its a busy nightlife area so to be expected. It doesnt quited down till 3am.
Then from 5am people have programmed their cellphone alarms so you wont really get much sleep if you are a light sleeper.
If you are looking for somewhere cheap to crash its fine but not your best nights sleep. I would chose another jimjilbang next time in Seoul

My wife and I went to happy day spa on two occasion during our stay near Hongik university area. The charges were like 8000 Korean won on a weekday and 9000 Korean won on a weekend.
There isn't any English instructions or guidelines in the spa, so you have to patiently ask the person working behind the reception desk about you wanting to jjimjilbang.
For 8000/9000 Korean won, you can spent whole day soaking yourself in the public bath house or heading into the jjimjilbang to detox your body. Or even catching some sleep in the open area. Happy day spa @ Hongik is really huge, especially the resting area.
This spa is patronize mostly by Korean families and friends.
At the moment the main building is under renovation, but happy day spa is still in business , as it occupied the basements.
Check it out happy day spa when you are at Hongik district.

If you are thinking about using this facility, i would like to tell you not to do. Staffs are very unkind(they are only kind for so-called 'health club(fitness club)' members. And electric key does not function properly. If u want feel BAD EXPERIENCE in Korean, then I do not care.

It is a nice Jimjillbang, my first one, it has perhaps 5 different waterbaths and a sauna, then there are some specialties saunas, but you have to be very good at korean, since they have no information at all in regards to what is what, and all instructions are in korean. Worth trying!
It quite easy to find, just on the left side of the marigold hotel building!
