Top ways to experience Hongik University and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Hongdae
Carefree enthusiasm is everywhere in this energetic neighborhood centered on Hongik University, Korea’s top art school. From its assortment of murals to the occasional amateur street performances, creativity and expression make up the wild and beating heart of vibrant Hongdae. At the Free and Hope Market (weekends at the Hongdae Children’s Playground) you'll find one of Seoul’s most popular handmade and creative markets drawing consistent crowds. At Hongdae, there’s never a shortage of things to do and see; food and drink options are nearly endless as are shops and noraebang (karaoke) rooms. Hongdae is also one of Seoul’s top party and club scenes catering to a younger demographic; if a packed club isn’t your scene, you'll also find a range of music venues and bars offering live music in all genres. Although Hongdae has lost much of its unique appeal and undergone rapid commercialization in recent years, be sure to explore Hongdae’s edges in areas such as Sangsu-dong and Yeonnam-dong where Hongdae’s fiercely independent streak still runs freely.

This review is a little misleading since Hongik University doesn't have much to offer your average traveler. If you are looking for educational opportunities, then maybe. However, the area surrounding Hongik University is one of the most exciting in Korea! Here's a review of those surroundings:

The Hongdae area has a little something for everyone, and for those who know, it is the artistic heart of Korea.

You will find more live music here of every genre imaginable than the rest of the peninsula combined, as well as a thumping club scene. Look forward to exhibitions of every art form of every description; street performances, weekend craft fairs, art galleries, studios; a small theater showing independent films (at a local landmark building called Sangsangmadang (상상마당). And then there's the food!

If there is a cafe/coffee shop center of the Korean universe, Hongdae is it; and In my opinion Hongdae has the best food scene in the country. Keep your eyes peeled for boutique bread shops and pâtisseries, outrageous cutting edge ice cream, insanely delicious street food stalls, and a host of international and domestic eateries that seem to all be driven by a passion for cuisine that makes Itaewon look like McDonalds.

Last but not least, don't forget the shopping opportunities of Hongdae, which run from the large franchises to a spectrum of local talent producing one of a kind work - all without the crush and super-consumerism of places like Myeongdong.

Listen - it's not Shangri-La, but it is an amazing breath of diversity in the often claustrophobic monoculture that you run into practically everywhere else. It's been a real pleasure for me personally because Hongdae isn't Korea - it's a collection of everywhere else. You will find people of every persuasion, from every part of the world on the streets of Hongdae. There is art painted on every wall: murals, graffiti, and advertisements alike. however, more importantly, I have found a vitality and openness here that hasn't yet succumbed to the acrimony of the consumer lifestyle - not yet anyway. Get it while it lasts.

Take line 6 to Sangsu Station or line 2 to Hongik University Station.

One can see many art projects and if you want to study somewhere but don't want to pay for an expensive coffee, there are several study halls that people can use. Technically they are for Hongik University students only but there is no one checking id.

Hongik University, and the surrounding districts, are a real positive addition to the life and culture of Seoul. The University is very much enamoured in the Arts and Design areas, and this is reflecting by the cool vibe in the areas immediately surrounding university also. Today was great. So many young people out and about, lots of Kpop dancing going on in the mall, many street food stalls bustling with people. It was truly a great day.

Like what some of the reviews mentioned here, it's the surrounding area of Hongik University you'll be more interested in because the areas has many shops and places for you to eat. The clothes sold there are relatively cheap too so it's definitely recommended for all shopaholics out there!:)

The area around Hongik University (known as Hongdae, pronounced 'Hong-day') is full of interesting little shops, artistic cafes, mini galleries and unique shopping experiences. The macarons are amazing, just down the street from the broadcasting station...

Nice campus located in a nice district. I used to live near this campus and like took occasional strolls on campus to visit friends. Famous for its artisan structures and relative closeness to the clubs and nightlife.
