When in Seoul, do you often find your lungs demanding something more closely resembling air? Well look no further! The Hongneung Arboretum (홍릉 수목원) and Korean Forest Research Institute is where all the oxygen is at!

Divided into 12 "gardens", the Arboretum includes conifers, broad-leaved trees, shrubs, herbs, subtropicals, ornamentals, edible/medicinals, exotics, and free-roaming carnivorous plants (I made that last one up). I know what you're thinking: who cares? Right? Well, Linnaeus, you don't need to be a botanist in order to recognize the value of a quiet stroll amongst the trees.

Free and open to the public on the WEEKENDS only (10 am to 4 or 5, winter or summer), just grab the subway, line 6 (brown), to "Korea University" (고려대) station. Go out exit 3 and make a right at the first intersection, following the highly visible signs until you get to the entrance on your left. It's perhaps a 10 minute walk. Bring a picnic lunch because whatever you do, don't go to the Chinese restaurant that you pass on your way to and from the Arboretum (a hideous staff, serving vicious fare).

You can easily walk the entire park in under an hour, even strolling. Have fun!

This belongs to National Institute of Forest Science and there's almost no sign for Hongneung Arboretum. In this lab, there are many rare plants and flowers. Good to visit if you are near.
- It is said they only allow guide tours on weekdays. But, it's free to walk around on weekend.
- 20~30 min walk from Cheongnyangni Station.
- Normally not crowded.
- Fine place to enjoy flowers like cherry blossoms. We especially loved maehwa(Japanese apricot) flowers.
- There are many different plants that are rarely seen in the city.
- Hillside area maybe a bit tough for seniors.

As a 73 year old horticulturalist from Australia, I loved this place. My daughter, who lives in Seoul, found it on the last day of my visit. Appreciated Latin names I could understand, and loved the bird boxes all through the forest with the sight & sounds of birds. A wonderful collection of trees. Beautiful walks breathing cleaned air, also enjoyed by my 6 year old grandson.

Only got to see it from the outside as I missed this key information on my Thursday visit. Easy to find. Looked beautiful.

The Hongneung Arboretum is a very peaceful place within a very busy city. Even though I am not a Tree person, I enjoyed the visit tremendously. All the tree and plants are labeled in Korean and with their Latin name, no English. My only regret is that I didn't bring a book to read, easel to paint, or my camera to take pictures.

What I mean is you can really see a wide variety of trees and plants that grow in a temperate climate. Good walks that don't really tire you out in addition to places where you can sit down and have a picnic lunch. Good for a family outing.
