What a charming city! The old town is so special. It shows you the history of the country and makes you enjoy the old architecture of buildings. Loved the food there and discovered new culture. Thank you Tbilisi for this!

The real Tbilisi! The mixture of old Georgia, the Ottoman influence and Iranian heritage all in quiet harmony. The only way to enjoy Tbilisi is by walking through its narrow alleys and enjoy the sites and the heritage. You can also enjoy a snack and maybe have a shisha in one of the many cafes in the area, or maybe dare the challenge of having a rough massage in one of the famous old hammams. If you are on your own you can find nice young guides offering their services for just a few dollars.

Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city in Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kira River with a population of 1.5 million people. Tbilisi was founded in the 5th century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia. Because of its location on the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and it’s proximity to the lucrative Silk Road, throughout history Tbilisi was a point of contention among various global powers. Tbilisi’s diverse history is reflected in it’s architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Noveau, Stalinist and the modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds, though it is currently overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox Christian. This area you will see the sulphur bath houses with their unusual roofs and also an abundance of food eateries. I need to go back to taste the wine ice cream as it was too cold when I walked the area. This is a must see area. Be aware there are quite a few beggars in this area so keep a little change in your pocket if you want to offer help.

Visiting the Old Twon will give an authentic experience of Old Tbilisi life and history.
From old churches, Synagog, Mosque, Sulphur Baths and old buildings, to traditional foods, restaurants, bakeries and shops.
Walking through the stone roads, where you can rest any time at good cafe or restaurant makes it a good tour to explore the Georgian traditional cousin and drinks.

So much to see from the main historical museum, parliament building, mall and just overall unique shops scattered about. There was always street vendors in certain areas and often on Saturday, there was a upscale street market where small creative people shared their handmade goods. May not have been always the cheapest stuff, but often would provide a discount for multiple items purchased. It is located outside the main mall downtown.
We found it easy to walk enough for all the sites but wear quality footwear for the distances.

I had only one day in Tblisi. I visited two churches in the City centre and the other was the great catholic orthodox cathedral at the old Tblisi town. Very big and rich Cathedral, with a lot of old gospel paitings and sculptures. Impossible to ignore that Georgian People faith is strong. Very good place to visit. And it is free.

Visit the old city and understand the people who have built it . The great tolerance of Georgians to other religions can be found here with the old synagogue near to several orthodoxic churches and the universal mosque .
Add to this the culture of healthy thermal Sulphur bath where one can enjoy in relax and everyone shall feel somehow at home .

The true heart of the city. It’s awesome to just get lost there and look at the unique buildings. The stray dogs followed us around and played with us.
If you have time, get a tour guide to walk you through the old town and tell you the stories behind the buildings and art pieces.

I booked a walking tour through the hotel concierge. This helped bring the stories and history to life. This is a nest part of town that feels like you have stepped back in time. After the tour you can hang out, wander, or eat on your own. This is more well-known for night life but going during the day to appreciate the buildings and history of the place.

Tbilisi is a great city to see by walking about and the old city is one my favourite parts of Tbilisi. It’s has a number of Orthodox churches, a mosque and synagogue. The area has number restaurants, bakeries and lovely residential buildings with lovely terraces, balconies with carved wood, and courtyards .A place to walk and sink in the surrounding areas

You might check hotelscom, but the best location to stay is either near Meidan, or old town square. Airbnb is also a big help (if you are interested). As far as Taxi, download these to Apps, they are pretty much like Uber:
1. Bolt-Taxify
2. Yandax
All you need is a local sim card, which you can buy it for about $5. Magti usually has a good coverage, speed and price, but you might check the other ones at the airport. Good luck and enjoy beautiful Tibilisi

С погодой угадать всегда непросто, но местные говорили, что обычно в конце декабря температура чуть выше нуля, около 5 градусов, а снега не видели давно.

I have just found out what time period you want to research. Very old records are in the State Archive. I'm just trying to find out how long back the documents go in either place and will get back to you

Hello there,
Home from home for backpackers in Tbilisi is Marjanishvili, a leafy street that`s full of local life, east of the Mtkvari River.Several homestays of varying character offer inexpensive accommodation here. They don`t serve food but there are plenty of economical eateries and food shops nearby. To get there using the metro you can get off both at the Rustaveli Station or the Marjanishvili Station.
Good bye to the old year ! Here`s to the new !

My family is from Tbilisi from before the war. Does anyone know who I would contact about finding family members that may still be there?
I know it's a long shot but thought we'd give it a try.
Email addresses of of old records perhaps ....open to suggestions too.
Thank you kindly,
Sonja
