It is also located on the left bank of the Kura, on the Nikoloz Baratashvili embankment. Alexander Griboyedov, due to changes in the legal status of territories and state-political entities, became a domestic poet for Georgia, just as Immanuel Kant became a domestic philosopher for Russia. It sounds funny, of course, but I have come across similar statements regarding Immanuel Kant in all seriousness. True, such cases have not yet occurred with Griboyedov and Georgians still do not consider him one of their own, and in 2021, during one of the outbreaks of anti-Russian sentiment in Georgian society, the monument was vandalized (something was thrown at it, eggs or something).
Griboyedov was buried in Tbilisi (more precisely, then it was called Tiflis). As is known, he was killed in Tehran. Griboedov Street in Tbilisi is located on the right bank of the Kura, but there is no monument there. There is no monument at the place of his burial, but the monument stands on the left bank of the Kura River on the embankment of Nikoloz Baratashvili, to whom, by the way, there is also a monument, but not on the Baratashvili embankment. There is no point in talking about Griboyedov. Any educated person knows his play "Woe from Wit" and knows the story of his life.
The monument to Alexander Griboyedov was erected during Soviet times in 1961. It was made in the typical Soviet monumental style. Griboyedov looks aloof and lifeless, although quite realistic with the details of his clothing.
The height of the monument without a pedestal is approximately five and a half meters. (the pedestal is still about the same height). Tall and large pedestals were characteristic of Soviet monumental sculpture.
The author of the monument is the Georgian, and before that Soviet, sculptor Merab Merabishvili (1931-2022). He has many different titles since Soviet times. The monument to General Bagration in Tbilisi also belongs to his authorship, and not one, but two, since the second one was installed in Moscow in 1999.
