During the Rose Revolution of 2003 then Georgian President Eduard Shewardnaze was forced to resign. The revolution was mainly peaceful and the Georgians are proud of it.
I did not find the square itself particularly attractive. There is the sculpture of a bike, which is very strange indeed. What I liked most there was the gorgeous view of large parts of Tbilisi that you have from the square.
