The historic Centre of Tbilisi. The Square sits where the old town meets Rustaveli. Anchored by the 19th century, neo-moorish city hall building and the 2006 statue of George slaying the dragon, the square has been the natural site of past gatherings and demonstrations. In 1907, Bolshevism’s rising stars conducted a daring, daytime raid on a delivery of cash to the bank on Freedom Square. The raid caused 40 dead / 50 wounded and netted 341k rubles ($3.4 million) but the funds had dubious value as it was mostly 500 ruble notes - the serial numbers had been recorded and the Bolsheviks couldn’t spend them or exchange them without getting arrested (which a couple did). Briefly having the name Freedom Square firstly in 1918, it witnessed many changes over the years and once again has that name. There are shops, restaurants and museums nearby. The traffic always seems to be busy, loud and hectic.

We must have walked through that square a dozen times our our way back to our hotel. This is where the memorial monument is, but this feels more like a large round about then a square. Still, really beautiful architecture all around!

Dunkin' Donuts, Khinkali House, Mado - just to name a few. But also many taxis parked, sometimes in 2 rows, making it difficult to get to your taxi or cross the square.

Freedom Square is a Tbilisi hub. There is always a lot of traffic. Most people who visit Tbilisi come here because this square links the old city and newer districts via Rustaveli Avenue. In the middle of Freedom Square there is the golden statue of St. George, a symbol of the independence of Georgia. The townhall, hotels and businesses can be found in this area.

My hotel is located around here so I walked around this Square during the duration of my stay. At the center of this Square is the Statue of Saint George. There is a lot of traffic here so pedestrians need to use the Underground Passages to go from one section to other areas of the Square.

There are government offices, restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, taxi stands, Group Tours, Money Exchanges, etc. here.
