- PernellevoyageValence, France6,213 contributionsSymbol and central square of TBilissiBuilt in the 19th century, this square took several names: under tsarist Russia, it was named Yerevan Square, then Lenin in Soviet times, finally Freedom Square at the independence of Georgia in 1991. The City Pension (“Méria”) is a superb building, built in 1882. It is the center of Tbilisi, the busiest square, their star roundabout, in short probably the most famous square of the city that is impossible to miss.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten August 16, 2024

This is the center of town where all the main roads coverages. The statue of St. George killing the dragon, represents the name of the country by many stories. It’s golden glow, particularly in the afternoons, is amazing and overshadows everything around it. It’s a beautiful statue. It’s definitely a better option than the previous statue that was here before 1991

A nice big square. The statue in the middle of the square belongs to one of the Georgian mythological heroes. Also bar beautiful pools and statues around the square. An ideal place to take beautiful pictures. You will definitely pass through this square while visiting Old Tbilisi. There is no place in Old Tbilisi that you cannot reach on foot.

The freedom monument is a big golden statue, it in itself is an attraction worth visiting, enjoy the site, the street performers -usually good bands-…etc, and when you add to it the value of the square, it becomes a must-visit.
The freedom or liberty square is at the heart of Tbilisi, from there you can walk down to the old city, visit the Meidan Square, the sulfur baths, house of worships for the three main religions, or you can walk in the rich Shota Rustaveli Ave, to see the Galleria mall, opera house, old Parliament, museums…etc., with the many cafes and restaurants, souvenirs shop and other attractions in both.
There is also a bus station in the square, and a metro station nearby.

At the very heart of Tbilisi, at its "Freedom Square", a 35m high granite column will immediately catch your attention! This is "Freedom Monument" - at its top, a bronze sculpture covered with gold of St. George, the patron saint of Georgia, fighting the evil dragon. The monument is a gift of its sculptor, Zurab Tsereteli, to his country and people. It was erected in 2006, following the Rose Revolution of 2003 and marks the end of the soviet era leadership in Georgia. A new era of freedom and independence has begun to the Georgian Nation! Enjoy!

This monument in the form of a column with the sculptural composition is located in the center of Freedom Square, in the summer functions as a fountain, decorated for the New Year very well. In Soviet times, Tbilisi central square called Lenin Square and in the center of it was, of course, a statue of Lenin. But after the "Rose Revolution" 10 years ago, the area was renamed Freedom Square, but on vacant place a monument to St. George.

The freedom square is a like an open mall. In the surrounding area there's a lot of shops, food, wine , etc. Accessible to anywhere like old town tbilisi and the bridge of peace and so on.

Freedom Monument is located at the beginning of Rutavelli street. View is worth a visit. You can see this square from Narikala castle too. You have to visit it one at day and another time at night. There is a tourist information center in one side of square.

The monument of freedom, in the middle of the square with the same name. A high pillar with a golden statue of St George, the patron saint of Georgia.
