This church is just a few minutes walk from the Strand Hotel and is set behind a wide pavement behind wrought iron gates. Go down the street on the right and enter through side gates, up some steps to the cool, shaded portico. It was built in 1863 after the earlier wooden one needed replacing. Father John is usually in attendance in the afternoons as well as at the Sunday morning service, and speaks English, Tamil and Burmese. I loved the cane seated long pews, and climbing up the dusty steps to the bell tower. The Armenian traders of the 18th C. established four churches in Burma at Syriam, Pegu, Mandalay and Rangoon. This is the only one left, and unless it gets heritage building status like all the other churches in Yangon it may disappear. Worth a visit.

My first visit to this church was in January, 2013 and my second in October 2014. I've been following its development and what a difference! it has been spruced up incredibly, with new paving and all the paintwork re-done, new draperies and the old pews repaired. A Russian Orthodox chapel has been created to one side and the congregation has grown. On March 1, 2015 new trustees, some descended from the original Armenian families to settle here, were elected. The new priest is Armenian. There are three history boards at the back - see photos.

Having walked by the Armenian church twice in March, while the gates were closed, one Saturday in November I was able to enter the compound and spoke to the caretaker. The next day, Sunday, the church was open at 8:30am for mass and I was finally able to enter this historic place and meet Father John. The Armenian community must have been quite prominent to have the church consecrated in 1863, when hardly any other brick buildings were around. I can imagine the Sarkies brothers, who founded the nearby Strand Hotel, greeting friends and relatives in the portico.
This church, an important building, and part of the history and social life of early Rangoon, needs to be placed on the Yangon city heritage list as soon as possible.

Lonely planet book about Myanmar provided the information about the existence of this unique church epitomising in one sacred building the surprisingly long history of Armenian diaspora in Burma or Myanmar. I had the chance not only to see and photograph the church from outside, but also to be blessed to be allowed to enter the church. The local security staff let me in. I admired the interior of the church where there are also posters about the history of the Armenian community in Burma. The security staff also showed to me the neighbouring chapel with Armenian, Russian, Greek and Serbian icons.

Walking on foot and saw this church. Out of curiosity, as gate was closed, we were allowed to get in.
One of these unexpected things you see and despite my travels n, I have never been in an Armenian church.

Certainly worth a visit , and to look around the church and at the various relics. The church is not always open, but if you meet someone and ask they will allow entry.

Really impressed with an Armenian church having built 1863 far away at Yangon. Well maintained interior as if the original..recommended to visit it.

This is one of the older churches in Yangon made of wood and bricks. The Armenian Christians were one of the sects of Christians in Yangon. This is a wonderfully maintained old church well worth visiting in Yangon,

Having prepared our itinerary for our trip to Myanmar we supremely come across the information about Armenian diaspora and its contribution to Burma and Yangon. since early 18 century . We were lucky to visit the church and enjoyed our Orthodox icons, music...Just got feeling that we were in mini Etchmiadzin Cathedral . Recommend to visit as the part of history of this city .
