We walked along Strand Road when we went to visit the Boatataung Pagoda. Early in the morning (before sunrise), the road was quiet and the breeze nice and cool. Along the way you can see remnants of majestic colonial and early post-colonial architecture. Having said that, my daughter seemed more interested in the small roadside stalls where lovely fresh crispy snacks were being prepared and sold. On this walk, at whatever time of day, it is easy to pop into The Strand Hotel for refreshments. Definitely worth an early-morning stroll if you have the time.

Stopped here for a cocktail and to imagine what it would have been like to be the wealthy aristocrat in colonial times. Beautiful building all redone inside. Fantastic cocktails and not bad price when you consider what a place like this would charge at home. Spoil yourself for a least one drink.

Walking along the few main roads of Yangon Downtown - Anawrahta Road, Merchant Road or Maha Bandoola Road can be quite stressful. Traffic is heavy, dusty and polluted. Human traffic is also heavy and hectic sometime brushing with strangers on their shoulders.
Strolling along Strand Road gives me another different experience. This road has less traffic, near to the harbor front and Yangon River and you see a different scenery. Instead of food vendors and dozens and dozens of commercial shops, you could see ships, bumboats, motor sampans and ferries berth beside the jetty loading and unloading goods and passengers. The morning sunrise harbor view is awesome especially near to Botahtaung Pagoda and Jetty.
It took me only 45 mins to walk from one end of Strand Road (near 9th Street Chinatown) to Botahtaung Jetty at the other end. I past by few of the busy jetties like Hledan Jetty, Phone Dyee Jetty, Pansodan Ferry Terminal before terminating at Botahtaung Jetty.
On my return trip, I strolled along the main Strand Road and appreciated the architectural designs of the many British colonial buildings that lined up on the right side of this long road. The General Post Office, the Custom House and the Port Authority buildings were few of the undeniably beautiful colonial assets passed down by the British.
I saw a Caucasian youth having his morning jog along this road. I think he chose the right road to jog as it is less polluted here due to less traffic. I still saw some stretch of the previous port railway line which had since been demolished but the metallic track still in tact on the ground.
It reminds me of the Malayan railway track that were demolished and removed from Singapore few years back. The Malayan railway company (KTM) did not even spare to leave behind any fragment of the metallic railway track.
I also visited Botahtaung Pagoda which was at the western end of Strand Road. It is easier to locate this temple by walking along Strand Road rather than finding it along Botahtaung Pagoda Road. I lost my sense of direction when I attempted to find the temple by walking from Maha Bandoola Road. It was this Strand Road that directly leads me to the temple. Many local devotees flooded the temple early in the morning and you can see the gilded stupa shimmers in the soothing morning sun. The shape of the stupa resembles that of a miniature Shwedagon Pagoda. The offering items laden with banana and coconut on sale at the market opposite the temple look impressively unique.
It is an interesting walk and it is not long. The walk gave me a quick glimpse of the early morning life of the locals, the scenery at the harbor front of the Yangon River, the Botahtaung Pagoda and the rows of British colonial buildings along the road.

You will pass by during a short sight-seeing tour through Yangon anyways. But that´s it. To stroll around doesn't make sense. You find almost none interesting buildings or beautiful scenery.

Always crowded but always fascinating, Strand Road is home to the best old buildings from the British colonial times including the Strand Hotel, the Post Office, several old banks and British Embassy (where all notices outside still refer to Yangon as Rangoon - LONG LIVE THE BRITISH EMPIRE!!!)
There are many street-food vendors.
Mind your footing as some of the pavements are very uneven.

Other that the Strand Hotel, there isn't much to see here. We visited at night, expecting to get some good views of the river. All we saw were heaps of trucks lining up to get into the port. Its pretty dark, and the roads along the river are very uneven with lots of pot holes.
