This is an original experience you won’t get in too many places. We booked this off Holland America Maasdam during our stop in Vanuatu. The professional crew picks you up by boat right from the dock. You arrive at a lovely coral and tropical fish studded cove where they prep you for the dive walk. They fit you with a transparent air supplied helmet and guide you through a coral garden as you walk on the sea floor. My wife and I felt absolutely safe under the watchful eye of several professional scuba divers floating all around us. It was a wonderful experience which was a highlight of our cruise.

So enjoyed this experience. The staff are great. Very understanding of being anxious about going under the water. Always making sure you’re ok & that you are enjoying the dive. Seeing the fish in their own environment was incredible.
Totally recommend Ocean walkers to others. Great opportunity for an unique experience with these friendly guys

We were on a cruise and decided to do this when called into Vila. We weren't sure what to expect but it was absolutely fantastic. We were picked up from the wharf and taken to the spot for the walk and then taken back to the wharf afterwards. We followed the area set aside for us and it was roped for us to hold onto if we needed. We felt very safe - they were always checking on us and were near us if we needed them. They gave us food to give to the fish and there was lots of them nibbling from our hands, even on our palms looking for more food. The coral was beautiful. Reef shoes are needed and a water proof camera if you have one. They do take photos which you can buy online from them if you want - the photos look great. You do not get your head wet and do not have to have scuba or snorkeling experience. This tour altogether took a couple of hours but we were in the water about 40mins which is ample time.

Not being swimmers we were apprehensive about wanting to go for a ‘walk on the ocean floor’. I am glad we did. It was one of our most thrilling ‘adventures’. I was most impressed with the safety aspect of this walk. After a very reassuring briefing we were made to walk the plank – the pause with only your head above water to get the ‘helmet’ on was the hump I had to get over. The walk was safe because of the scuba diver checking on your every move and a snorkeler on the surface keeping an eye on you, the only thing left was to enjoy the underwater world up close, star fish, sea cucumbers and many beautiful fish made the walk enjoyable. Keep your glasses on; you come back with your hair style intact.
Sighting the ramp to take us up to the boat was not a welcome sight – could have kept walking!

I was a bit nervous about the walk as I am claustrophobic but had no problems at all! I felt completely safe the whole time. It's definitely something everyone should try. The staff were fantastic especially Tommy who looked after us well. Four of us (over 50) went together and we all had an amazing experience!

I was a little worried at first but when I was down on the ocean floor I could not believe it. It was awesome. The only thing is I cannot find the pics they took.

I always want to go deeper in the coral but with snorkelling it is not possible, but in Vanuatu, I found Oceanwalker. It makes it easy to enjoy the view underwater. I had done something similar before in the Great Barrier reef in Queensland but I was excited to try it out again .
The day of the dive, we were picked up at the hotel and were taken to the dive area by the short boast ride. The day was just perfect with the sun out and the blue sky. At the dive area there were 4 people who were there to help us through this amazing journey.
We had one more group, a family joining us for the dive.
First we were briefed by our PADI qualified instructors with instructions about the helmet dive equipment and we were given a form to sign our life away.
Then the adventure began with a descent to the short ramp in the water, where a helmet is fitted on the head and then off you go. It was really a fun experience because you don’t have to worry about swimming or breathing. Air is continually pumped into the helmet so the water doesn’t rise above your shoulder even when you are 4 meters underwater.
We met lots of fish down there including nemo and the zebra fish. It was so cool. One of the instructors was with us all the time so there was no fear of getting lost or anything. He even caught a fish in his hand twice and gave it to me but the fish just escaped from my hand. :) It was really fun experience. I also got to hold a sea cucumber.
There were so many fish around us that we felt like kids running after it. I really enjoyed the whole experience and was sorry that it ended after around just 20mins. The memory will live in me forever. :)

The Oceanwalker helmet dive has been one of the highlights of our honeymoon. A comprehensive safety and instruction brief is given at the start - so anyone from beginner to advanced skill level can hop in and enjoy. Having a scuba diver guide you and a snorkeller guiding you during the ocean walk is great. Feeding the fish underwater was heaps of fun. A great step up from snorkelling for people who want to experience more. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Port Vila.

is it ok if you wear glasses

There is no water in the helmet. The helmet sits on your shoulders and the water level is below your chin. Once in the water the helmet is supported by the water so you won’t have any problem wearing glasses.

I am travelling on a cruise in April and have booked this tour which I will be doing on my own. Will there be many opportunities to use an underwater camera if I take one? Also, are the staff able to talk to you through the helmets while underwater?

I took my panasonis Lumix camera, no problems at all, got a couple of good shots of fish etc. murky water not to bad as the fish get very close. pick at their reflection in the camera lens.
Divers communicate via hand signals.

What medical conditions would prohibit going on the ocean walk?

They ask a list of questions regarding your health and this can rstrict your ability to go. There is no medical so it is up to you what you answer. I have asthma that is controlled and while the form says that it might effect my ability to go, the cruise shi said it would stop me. I might have missed that question and had no problems. There is a safety scuba diver and another snorkeller on the surface for an overview of the area.Hope this helps

I think something like claustrophobia might be a problem or things like seizures.
It's not a terribly physical activity but you do have to walk down a few steps to start the ocean walk. I think other conditions as long as controlled should be okay.
You may find more info on their website.
