Our lovely tour guide Dimitri took us on a round trip of the island (roughly 8 hours) starting with the lovely residents of the Iarofa village, then on to the blue lagoon, to the beautiful beachside restaurant for lunch (included), on to big lookout and then to Gideon’s landing. A wonderful way to see so much of the main island and learn about the local culture both past and present. Costs around $90 AUD so is very reasonable and would recommend to anyone wanting to see the sights!

rarely does a genuine exceptional tourism experience present.
prior to embarking on a standard 7 day cruise ex brisbane to the south pacific i did an internet search and accidently found a tour called the real vanuatu.... discontinued ....so i thought i would try and find a replacement. first stop ian at small guide.com.au followed by gilbert at atmosphere who said he could duplicate the experience. i didn't fancy being squeezed in to a bus at enormous expense with a shore tour offered by p&o so decided to chance my arm with a character called gilbert prounounced "gil bear"

for about the same cost, $70AUD as standard p&o tour gilbert met and returned us to the ship and showed us all over port vila over some 3 plus hours in airconditioned comfort.

i won't tell you all about gilbert's tour except to say it was comprhensive and included many stops not even mentioned in the quote. i will mention one highlight that in 35 years of travel i have never experienced.

we entered a back road in the back blocks of port villa and stoped in front of a newly cleared track that lead of into the jungle

gilbert sys this is where i have arranged the dances from Ambryn an outer island. the walk down the path led to a clearing and a very basic single seat prepared from small bush logs. i looked around for a cooking pot i thought we might be dinner... it was very different. out of the bush apeared the dances and provided an amazing experience for we 4 just of the boat tourists.

bottom line don't miss this opportinity if you go to vila

Atmosphere Tours is owned and operated by Gilbert who is a lovely local from town. Recommended by our Hotel (Coral Motel) we joined Gilbert's Round Island Tour for 5500 (about 60 aud)which took us around the whole of Efate Island in a new comfortable bus.

Major stops included Etons Beach, Blue Lagoon (where he prepared a fantastic morning tea using local crops, demonstrated coconut preperation and had a ride in a traditional canoe), a small preschool in a local village at Manuro Point (ran by local parents), Bamboo Beach (buffet lunch, local string band and gorgeous beach), WW2 Museum in Port Havannah (or lets say a small collectors hut with WW2 memorabilia-Earnest who collects the antiques is a character) and an afternoon stop at a small beach across from Lelepa Island where you can snorkel and enjoy an afternoon drink.

The day is extremelly enjoyable and I recommend it to all travelling to Vila. Gilbert is professional, knowledgable and extremely welcoming to all. Stationary of any kind is also very much appreciated at the local pre-school where they get no funding... Note that every little bit helps!

Booked cultural village school and snorkelling tour. Our guide was not in a mood for talking and we received no information from him. Cultural Village was well done and interesting. Lots of tree roots on rough path so not really recommended for people using walkers or unsteady on feet. Uphill incline also.
We were not told it was school holidays and school was closed so that part was left out. Went to resort and transferred directly to a small boat which took us across a lagoon, then we started to walk for about ten minutes through the bush. Again no information. We go to the other side and the water and asked where was the snorkelling gear ! There was no facilities for changing and no snorkelling equipment. The guide then proceeded to go to sleep under a tree. The water was fast flowing and not suitable for snorkelling or swimming. The brochure said we would go to an island with a beautiful coral garden. We had a very quick dip to cool off and then marched back to where the boat left us. We had to ask where there were change facilities to get out of wet swimmers before lunch. Eventually found toilets where we changed. The resort was having their Christmas staff day but they did prepare nice hamburgers for lunch. Following an extended lunch break since no school and no snorkelling. Went to Cava place.. Again the brochure said we would be told about cava making but non of that. Just given a bowl of muddy liquid and no ceremony.

The blue lagoon is well worth seeing, very pretty area with a swing rope into the pool that is lots of fun for the kids. The turtle sanctuary was a little disappointing. The complex and "resort" is completely run down and is virtually an abandoned building site , but we were not staying there and only came to see the beach, lagoon and the turtles so that didn't matter. A local guide walked us around to look at the farm animals and the turtles, he had very little information to impart which was disappointing. There are some small concrete pools that young turtles are kept in to protect them and a large wading pool that you can get in if you like. The advertised "swimming with the turtles" was quite different from what I had expected. The beach(coral sand) was nice and we swam and snorkelled but had to pay extra to hire the snorkels etc. The lunch at another resort was simple but very pleasant.I suppose my expectations were a bit high so I was disappointed with the turtle sanctuary.

I found this tour company on the internet and although I was rather doubtful about using them for a tour while our cruise ship was in Vila for the date, the great reviews made me decide to book with them. They did not even require payment or even a deposit, just relying on the honesty of the person booking to do the right thing. They sent me several emails about the different tours and when I replied they answered promptly.
On our arrival in Vila there were there to greet us. We decided to go on an around the Island tour and the cost was $90 each, compared to the Cruise ship tour around the island for $135 each. My husband and I , plus a family of 5 were the only ones on the bus which holds about 16 passengers. Usually the tours provided by the Cruise company would have packed all the people in like sardines and would have been very regimented. We went for a drive along the countryside for about 45 minutes with the host Frazer showing us points of interest along the way who was friendly, happy and very knowledgable as well as being a local. The driver George was also a local and was also very friendly and talkative with the group. We went to a cultural village which was wonderful and included firewalking, dancing, handicrafts and a great commentary about the village life in Vanuatu. We were offered complimentary tea and biscuits before we left for our next destination which was the Blue Lagoon. This was fabulous with the bluest water you could imagine. We were there for about an hour and a half to allow the group to swim and take photos. Various types of fruit and drinks were provided for us. Our next stop was Turtle Beach which was a lovely resort with very beautiful waterfront with a sandy beach. We were shown the baby turtles and were able to handle them. We were then shown a large pool which had reef sharks, fish and many turtles. After that we were taken to a huge covered area and were given a lovely TBone steak lunch with chips and sald, plus bread and free drink and it was excellent. After this we drove through the countryside and were shown all the main city sights and then taken to the waterfront markets which were great. All in all a most fabulous day and one I would recommend to everyone going to Vila. Frazer and George were unbelievable, so friendly and joking with the passengers.

As all the other reviewers, Gilbert provided us with a great day with the tour around the island and as experienced by other people - Gilbert just seems better organised and takes you to more and better places than other tour groups.

If you can pls take school supplies for the kids when you stop at the village - that or give to Gilbert who sends to the outer islands

Gilbert and his full day tour were a real highlight of the holiday in Vanuatu (Feb 2009). The Blue Lagoon was magnificent and his knowledge of the local history is fantastic. The time spent in Vanuatu would not have been nearly as enjoyable without Gilbert and Atmosphere Tours. Some people also staying at Mangoes Resort went on other tours that had buses break down or they were cancelled at the last minute and were in general very rushed. You shouldn't try to fit in too much in a tour as each site has so much to offer.
Gilbert himself is so polite and helpful - he agreed to take us to the Cascade Falls and Tara Beach on another day as we didn't want to go with another tour company. It's great to know that your money is going to the locals. I would definitely recommend going on a tour with Atmosphere - in fact make sure you do!

After lots of research (including the previous reviews of Atmosphere Tours), I decided to book a round island tour of Efate with Atompshere Tours during our week's stay in Vanuate in the first week of December 2008.

I emailed some questions to Atmosphere Tours and within a couple of days was given the cost and tours available, with advice to ring Gilbert when I arrived in Vanuatu.

Once at Port Vila, I rang and arranged to meet Gilbert at a local cafe, together with my travelling companions (there were six of us including my two teenage daughters). Gilbert is a lovely, quietly spoken local fellow who has made arrangements with local people in the various provinces around Efate to share some of their fantastic sites and customs with visitors. We paid Gilbert the full cost upfront and he met us right on time the next day.

We were lucky enough to have Gilbert's new, air conditioned mini bus to ourselves. The round island tour cost around $90 each which included morning tea, a delicious lunch cooked by one of the locals, and afternoon tea. It's a long, bumpy drive around Efate, but there were just enough stops to make the day both informative and fun. We visited some of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen, a vividly blue fresh water lagoon, a spectacular lookout, a couple of villages (which included some local dance performances) and finished off with some snorkelling at Havannah Harbour.

We had come well armed with lots of stationery for a planned school visit, but school had just broken up for the year. Instead we gave some of the stationery to a local villager for the village children (he had walked up to our bus out of the blue and given us a large bunch of bananas). We then stopped at another village where a large group of village children were playing. They were very friendly and happily returned our greetings, but when they realised we wanted to share some stationery with them, we were mobbed to say the least! Village kids came from every direction. Our own kids' unused stationery of writing books, paper, letter writing sets, pens, pencils, felt pens, display folders, atlases, dictionaries, etc found good homes.

We asked Gilbert lots of questions and he was very helpful in giving us tips on how we could access other spots around Port Vila. He is planning some additional 1/2 day tours to sights around Efate which would be good for those who find a full day too long.

All in all, a very satisfying tour. We feel we've seen some of the best Efate has to offer and It gave us good grounding for the rest of our fantastic holiday.
