I have traveled to many places in the Pacific including Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Fiji, New Caledonia, Samoa, French Polynesia.

One of the things I ensure I I visit are the local markets. I have the markets in these countries colourful with vibrancy and variety of produce.

Unfortunately, I found this market very disappointing and lack lustre.

I don’t blame the producers as they are trying to compete in an industry where many people have left Tonga to fruit pick in Australia and New Zealand. I just felt really sorry for the producers. It really is disappointing to see. I still bought a few things just to support the local economy.

Took a visit to the market and was a little underwhelmed by what was available. Even though it was late morning not all stalls were open and some were just setting up. There were some good crafts available and the produce looked great. Could do with some signs as it took some time to discover where things were still worth a visit.

The only thing I did not like about this market was seeing quite a few little Asian shops popping up. There is heaps of fresh fruits and vegetables and quite a few stalls selling head made cafes from baskets and bags to jewellery and placemats etc and I found the prices cheaper than other pacific islands that I have visited. Word of warning it seems that none of the public toilets in Tonga provide paper so you will need to bring your own!

Located rather centrally in Neiafu. Fresh fruit and veggies to make life a little easier / cheaper for you if your cooking at home everything you need.

Loads of shops to have a look at which all have something rather similar to be honest but if you’re after something to take back home for a good memory it’s worth a stop by and something to do for half an hour!

Well worth several visits and don't forget the 2nd level, there can be bargins to be had up there. When buying shell necklaces and such you can get it engraved with a name at no extra cost at some stalls

Some nice local crafts and ok veges and fruit. Friendly people. Local colour! Prices are reasonable. Narrow passages ways though so don't bring a stroller.

Go here first for souvenirs.
This market has lots of fruit and veg, as well as souvenirs and Tupenu (Tupenu is the Tongan term for a wrapped garment also called a sarong, lungi, or lava-lava).
There are wonderful handmade bags, fans, Tapa cloths, mats, baskets, wall hangings and drawings. I got bracelets for the kids (you get there names engraved on them).

Easily spent about three hours wandering around, wouldn't have minded having a heap more money to buy some of the local collectibles as they are really quite impressive. Lots of fresh fruit and Vegies too.

I was told this is the place to go if you want cheap vegetables and souvenirs. They were not wrong. There is a nice hustle and bustle about the markets, with an even split of fresh food one side and all the tourist souvenirs the other, and upstairs. Everything is a good price so don't bargain with the locals.

Important note: Do not open a wallet with $100s in it. Have low notes in your pocket ready.

From back in the day to today this place has always been bustling with life. This was the hub where you could sell your fruits or your wares and catch up on life with all the other people and learn the news. Outside of the market there are old timers playing checkers and bingo is just 3 blocks down. The bus depot is around the corner and a block away. Police station and supermarket are also across the street. Everything was built around here. You can get the best deals on your souvenirs or your fruit. The prettiest mats to wear or flowers for your hair. You can literally find everything you need here. The prices are cheap you are open to haggle if you wish but it is definitely a big part of history see it on a saturday and it's even busier than any other day.
