If we were going to snorkel and look at the reef then a very bad spot, but really relaxing just hiring a hut and drinking beers on an island and having lunch, was great to relax but don't go here to snorkel.

A 5 minute water taxi ride from Anse Vata Beach ($12 RT) lies Duck Island. A small sandy outcropping with a fairly nice restaurant and bar and beach all around. There is good snorkelling available and a marked snorkelling path to follow with signage about what you might see. The island is filed with modern renditions of traditional art and... More

The island is tiny and a five minute ride out by water taxi from the beach at Anse Vata. We took a quick run out on the day we were leaving, just to have a walk about. We were really surprised how lovely the place was with an upmarket bar and restaurant, lots of semi-private sun tents and gardens all... More

We loved our day at duck island. Easy water taxi with 2 kids. Worth paying the extra for a shady hut with loungers to sit on. We went on a Monday and was not busy at all but apparently very crowded in weekends. Need reef shoes as sand is all rough coral. Nice beach for kids to swim and bar... More

Visited during a Royal Caribbean cruise. Cruise organised excursion cost 3 times as much as we paid - go to cruise terminal and get a local tour. We took an early glass bottom boat to the island and were the first to arrive. Stayed 2 hours and by the time we left the island was getting crowded. Hired sunlounge and... More

Visited noumea from a cruise ship on armistice day so the place was pretty quiet and not much was open. We jumped on the hop on hop off bus and got off at Anste beach, from there we caught a water taxi over to duck island. The swimming and snorkelling was ok. If you want any shade you need to... More

It's a quick water taxi ride from the mainland to access a good reef for snorkeling. There is good amount of marine life and coral, although the coral looks like it's starting to bleach. Toilets are in good condition and clean. The price of drinks at the bar are reasonable given that it's an island. My only concern is that... More

Paid 1500 xpf each for return taxi to island, took all of 3 minutes, walked around island admiring nesting birds of many species, went to sit on one of hundreds of sun lounges scattered around the 2hectares of island, no sand, crushed coral, necessary to wear appropriate footwear always, immediately told, 'you sit, you pay', which we, as only 2... Go early, or else you're left stranded hunting for a beach chair to rent. That's what happened to us on our first day which was a weekend. Still the snorkelling was so good we went back early on a weekday and had the pick of spots. It was high tide too, which made it easy to swim over all the... More
