The Noumea downtown isn't very attrative , but this square can be sometimes attractive, specially when there are some fleas market or any attractions organised. The plantations are nice there. But I don't recommend you to adventure there at night, as this place can be very insecure with drunk and agressive tramps.

It's a great navigational tool but not much to see or do and not overly pretty to look at either. Got a very dirty feeling from the area.

Not much was happening in and around this area and there are a lot of loiterers. We didn't stay very long.

We went shopping here for souvenirs. It was very untidy, locals throwing their rubbish on the ground. Lots of broken concrete. It reminded me of the typical pacific island has been, was once nice but now old and poorly maintained. Lots of groups of locals just hanging about and I guess some might be a bit afraid of that especially... More

The square at the center of Nouméa gives the traveller a vague and remote idea of how charming and beautiful the city might have been before it got invaded by the actual crowd of French nationals who came here to collect the expat dough. Nouméa is now a sea of horrendous concrete that has been poured without any urban planning... More

I also understood that Noumea was a first world environment in the South Pacific but its not like that at all. This is the centre of town and many homeless people hang out here. There is some sort of social services in Noumea but I was informed that they don't do much. Also there are gangs of young men who... More

The bus stops here and there is a nice cafe but it has a bit of a depressed feel. Step out and head for the harbour or track down some of the better shops. They are there if you look. There is a great book shop and a fantastic children's wear shop.

Unfortunately like many city centres this little square is no longer the attractive little place it used to be but a 'hang out' to be avoided. To be avoided at night and Sundays especially. The buses go thru there on each route so sometimes necessary to be there for that reason. The small museum nearby is well worth a visit... More
