KUENDO BEACH HAS THE USUAL LOCAL SHORTCOMINGS - PLUS A FEW POSITIVES.

SHORTCOMINGS – once again we are looking at a fairly narrow (water to back of beach) strip of sand – some parts less than a meter at full tide. The sand was not great –grey-yellow with plenty of weed and coral detritus. The water not super clear and deepening only slowly. There was a bit of coral rock offshore with a few fish, but nothing to get excited about. Only half the 400m beach was open to the public, the rest taken by the resort.

POSITIVES – most of NOUMEA’S beaches face into the prevailing south-east trade winds which can get pretty brisk even on nice days. KUENDO is oriented away from these frequent winds, helped by high protective headlands and hills. This leads to very smooth water conditions – just the thing for easy swimming. Also the location at the end of the NOUVILLE PENINSULA west of the CBD and CRUISE TERMINAL is a semi rural one – the beach is backed by a spacious park area, hills further out and is not crowded by cafes and city buildings.
Calm water which gradually deepens plus the park make this an excellent beach for kids.

TIPS.
- from the CBD take bus #10 which terminates near the beach. Walk 80m further and take the track to the right which goes 150m thru the park to the sand. I caught the bus at a stop on RUE DE GENERALL GALLIENI one block west of the CRUISE SHIP TERMINAL but NOUMEA was undergoing CBD roadworks so this could change. Fare 210 pacific francs. BTW this bus on return goes all the way thru to the very good OUEN TORO* viewpoint in NOUMEA’S south, passing the other popular NOUMEAN beaches – ANSE VATA* and LEMON BEACH* (all of which I and many others have reviewed on TRIPADVISOR) so if you want to do an all day beach crawl, this bus would facilitate.
- there are a number of other beaches surrounding KUENDO. Abt 300m due south on the east-facing coast is PLAGE DE NUDISTES. To the nudists’ north another UN-NAMED BEACH, to its south a beach beside the CHS HOSPITAL All suffer the deficiencies mentioned up-page including exposure to the south easterlies.

Much better than 2years ago - no more garbage, the beach itself is better ( though still needs some regular cleaning), again it is getting popular with locals over the weekends (barbecue). Beware of homeless people who came to reside in the surrounding area . Weekdays is the best time for a visit, daytime only. Direct bus service to/from Anse Vata (bus 10, 45 min one way, ticket 210 XPF one way). Most enjoyable for swimming - quite shallow, no waves. Nowhere to buy food/drinks ( would not count in the adjacent motel).

Nice beach which locals enjoy. It is not well maintained I'm afraid so really nothing special. Decided not to stay as it was quite busy. Probably would not go again.

Having a car we decided to drive out to look at this beach that some people have praised. We didn't stay more than 20 minutes. The beach was nothing special with half taken up by the Kuendo Beach Resort (that didn't look anything special either). There are no facilities but I guess if you buy a coffee from the resort bar you could use their toilets. The sand was gritty but the sea is shallow and calm, sheltered from the usual windy conditions on New Caledonia. There is plenty of parking and shade under some trees on a grassy stretch behind the beach. Overall it looked very much a locals beach and we found the number of stray dogs roaming about to be very off putting so we didn't unpack and headed back to the Lemon Bay.

Catch the local no 10 bus to the last stop and you’ll find a nearly deserted beach to explore. It is close to a resort with a snack bar, bar and restaurant. Worth a visit for 210 francs each way.

This beach is a bit out of the way from the rest of Noumea. It's worth the drive out. There are several quick stops on thew drive out to see the buildings of Old Noumea. The beach itself is pleasant. The real draw is the throngs of locals having picnics, playing games, and just generally enjoying themselves.

This is a beautiful location a 15 minute drive from Noumea city centre and well worth a visit.
The beach itself is nothing special, but the water is gorgeous clear, smooth and shallow.
We visited on a Tuesday afternoon, there were not many visitors and it was very peaceful.
It is worth walking along the top of the peninsula on the left hand side of the beach (as you face the water) all the way to the end, the views are amazing.
We travelled from Anse Vata by #3 bus - it is worth checking the front of the bus before you board as not all of them go all the way to Kuendu Beach (you don't want to take two buses to get here as you pay for each journey).

Spend some great quality time visiting this remote area on the island of Nouville.
The place looks very quiet and empty with pristine water which looks perfect for a gateway from Civilization. The left cliff is a great area to take pictures from. A resort is over there as well with a watersilde pool.
Check it out for yourself.

Coming off the ship with an extended family of 7 we encountered a lovely lady in a booth in the far corner of the Cruise Terminal from PRIVATE TOURS. Anne is very passionate about her Noumea and meeting people. A teacher, she has excellent English and gave us an excellent commentary about colonial and modern Noumea and took us to the main high spots to view the city. We then drove across to the distant peninsula and Kuendu Beach. I had been to Noumea several times and suffered crowding at Anse Vata and other beaches so I was very happy to find a almost disserted beach with only a few locals playing football. The water was cool and my family enjoyed floating in the clear shallows. Thanks Anne.

Hopped onto bus 10 from ansevata: went all the way to the end and found Kuendu Beach, where the local villages are not bright shops, grass reserves and a beach with one hotel, calm good for kids and to be away from the crowds.
