A beautiful area to walk and soak up the serenity of the place. If you are a fan of war cemeteries and especially of Australian war dead, this is the place to visit . Again as it is located outside Port Moresby, it is highly recommend to ensure you travel with a reputable tour group or have security escort with you.
Unfortunately Port Moresby is not safe to travel by yourself.

Such a beautifully maintained cemetery to visit and pay tribute to those who fought so bravely.
On my visit a guard provided a good overview of the place as good as any tour guide (I gave him a tip but believe he wasn’t expecting one). I’m likely to return to sit under one of the massive trees and read a book while occasionally looking up and acknowledging how lucky I am because of the sacrifice of the brave men who lie here.
A must visit for anyone from the commonwealth and especially Australia.

Well maintained memorial honoring the fallen. Easy access from Port Moresby. In my view, one of the highlights of the Port Moresby area.

Just off the road from Port Moresby at the southern end of the Kokoda track is Bomana, the largest war cemetery in the Pacific. It contains 3779 graves. There are 3069 known and 237 unknown Australians from the fighting in New Guinea. Its a very moving place to visit.

Worth visiting, if only to see the sheer numbers of fallen. The best preserved and presented "site" in Port Moresby. Clean and peaceful. Bit of a rough trip to get there...

I had the opportunity to visit Bomana twice this week. Once at the end of completing 10 days on the Kokoda Trail and then today as the Anzac Day dawn service.
After the trail it was a moving and sobering experience. It is well designed and laid out. You can see VC recipient Kingsley grave along with over 3000 others, 700 who are known only to God. A moving and reflective experience and a highlight.

Beautifully kept cemetary - very moving to walk through the headstones and ralise how many are of "unknown soldiers". Don't forget to sign the book.

Visited Bomana War Cemetery on business trip to Port Moresby. It was beautifully cared for and very moving. There is a separate memorial for the missing service personnel. Most moving was the fact that the New Guineans who were killed during the war are buried with the Australian, British and New Zealand personnel they fought with. Just shows the close relationship between Australia and PNG that endures today.

With no signage it proved challenging to find but was worth it when we did - look out for a G4S security logo on the gate. Staff are employed by the Australian/ UK governments so watch out for them asking for tips.
We were the only people that had visited in several days, and spent a good hour paying our respects. Well worth a visit.

How did you get from PM to Bomana? Did you hire a car and drive yourself, or hire a driver to take you? How long is the drive from PM? Thanks
Written April 26, 2017
Hi there, I was with friends who are used to driving in PNG, I wouldn't recommend you drive yourself if you are unfamiliar with PNG. The drive is not that far, about half an hour from memory.
