While a beautiful park that is rarely crowded, once should visit in large groups for safety. I was hiking in a group of three and some rascals with knives and a gun robbed us. Be careful!

This is the place to see the Birds of Paradise, Raggiana. It is best seen with a guide who will know where the Raggiana do their display. I went with a birding tour. The park was clean and had picnic pavilions. Vault toilets were available. Trails were well maintained.

Hello Travelers, let's be honest you are only here if you are a good step away from you comfort Traveler back in the Spanish holiday resort or Disneyland. Welcome to the largest rain forest outside the Amazon. PNG is twice as big as Great Britain and still over 80% covered in rain forest. This is bloody awesome and you will get the chance to experience just a little bit of it here. So when you plan to visit, please, please, please use you common sense. Arrange a full guide and security. PNG is safe regardless what you here, no different to many places like this around the world. In fact I would say, having been to many, PNG is safe, but you need to be sensible. Check your timings and check the weather (even if it is blazing sun). I would also ensure people know when you go and when you are back. Wear the right clothing and take the right equipment on any walk even the smallest and easiest. Wear LOTS of mozzie spray and if I see another tourist wearing flip flops, I swear I will feed them to a Cassowary personally. So with this in mind, go and enjoy an amazing place. Take plenty of photos and memories away with you and nothing else!

Its become my favorite color now, green. And blue. There was a BEAUTIFUL plateau in there that had a blue view of the ocean. It's also safe, no wild animals ought to kill you or anything ;). You can ride down there, on car, but there should be two. You need a backup too, its very dangerous, and thrilling, if you go by yourself. There are many birds of paradise, so many you might want to bring a Bird-of-Paradise-Guide, you won't know what kind they are. ;D

it's a wonderful park in a spectacular location with fine views over the cliffs and across forests and savanah and down to the sea and teh National Capital and up towards the Owen Stanley ranges; great bird life, including birds of paradise and fine walks, but there have been crime incidences in the park, so best to have local company.

We visited the park twice as part of a organized birding group. The park is huge, clean with well maintained trails. This is a great place to see the Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise at their display leks early in the mornings.

This and the road to here are fantastic for birds. Also the Pacific Adventist Campus on the road to the park. The rest room facilities are lacking in toilet paper so BYO.

I took a day trip with Daniel, from New Guinea Natural Tours. I was a bit nervous as a solo female traveller, but felt completely safe with Daniel. Hotel pick up in a good vehicle, easy scenic drive and lovely park. Good walking tracks, lots of birds, including Reggiana and manucode birds of paradise, and so many more. A great dayand very knowledgeable guide - thank you!

Our second birding outing in PNG was to Varirata National Park which offered a variety of habitats - thick forest, open fields, picnic grounds, easy & challenging trails. Picnic area is easy to access, with basic facilities nearby. The rest of the park seemed more of an adventure. Signage was minimal and the park is large; probably best to go with someone who knows the trails (some steep, many wandering through thick forest). Birds were great, if not always easy or cooperative. Raggiana birds of paradise were gorgeous at their lek, plus some beautiful kingfishers, a barking owl and a wallaby. Lovely.

Can I hire a guide for birdwatching at the Park entrance, or do I have to make different arrangements?
Thanks for your help
Written September 30, 2016
I am so sorry, I read your message only now...
We hired him at the park entrance and actually, he hired us.. :=))
But it was about 12 years ago...
If I were you I would just go there very early in the morning when you'll have plenty of help and enough time to take you decisions...
I hope I helped in time...
