The Waterkant is the slightly seedy/run down river boulevard of Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. This is actually part of the historical city centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site! There are several quite characterful restaurants directly on the waterside. E'tembe for instance still serves various types of bush meat including Alligator and even Capibara ....

This is a great area to watch water activities. We walked along this area early morning as our exercise which was very pleasant. Many Nice old colonial houses along the boulevard are very picturesque. There were a lot of places to eat along the way.

There are local delicacies available from the different ethnical groups living in Suriname at reasonable prices. There is a chinese family whom fries your order right in front of you. I was surprised to see that the river is now blocked off and separated from your view when eating.

It’s not fancy but it captures the spirit of the city.. there are a couple of cute hotels here and we stayed in one - very nice.. good launching off spot for runs in any direction along the water!

Went here on a Sunday when a Brazil soccer match was playing and found it very quiet and near desserted. The quiet was actually nice!
There is a good view of the Surinam river and the Wijdenbosch bridge from here.
You can tell this place can get very vibrant in the evening and I imagine it would be nice to hang around here with food and drinks. This spot is at walking distance from the hotspots, Tourbox, Torrarica, restaurants and dancings. Also the old buildings are right there to visit.

There are two parts to the waterkant - one with the hotels and restaurants which is worth it. The other half is a dive! Not to be a snob (which I am being) it was just offering some rum shops that locals drink at but seemed quite menacing and a local market for tourist items that were very poor in quality and the sellers all looked bored and almost apologetic.

You really understand why Paramaribo is on the UNESCO Heritage Site walking along this street and the ones running parallel to it. There are some ladies selling natural soaps, syrups, medicines and oils (very pricey) and some snack outlets overlooking the river where you can also see the ruins of the German wreck in the middle of the river.
Be aware of pick pockets.
I spent an hour walking around the streets to get photos of the old colonials buildings and it as very hot, so try and go early in the morning. The best time is on Sunday morning as traffic is virtually non existent in Paramaribo then.

Rated as one of the top attractions of Paramaribo, we didn't really want to miss it. Waterkant is in an excellent location where one side are historical & prominent buildings and other side the vast expanse of river. We walked around and had a coffee by one of the stalls. Can easily spend an hour or so there.
