The fort is definitely a must-see while in Paramaribo. The fort and museum gives a nice history of Suriname from its earliest times to more recent times. This is a good activity to spend about 45 minutes to an hour. However, be aware that most signage is in Dutch, and only a few items have English explanations.

Fort Zeelandia was first built by the British and extended by the Dutch as a fortification on a prominent point on the Suriname river. It has mostly been a prison throughout the years, and even the scene of recent history with the political December murders in 1982. Now it is a rather gorgeous small museum about the history of Suriname. Outside is the statue of Queen Wilhelmina, also the monarch of Suriname in her days.

The fort was much smaller as expected. Several rooms did contain expositions with old utensils. The historic pharmac was very nice to see. The fort looks out over the river.
There is a monument with the names of victims of the December murders 1982.

Lovely to view a bit of Suriname’s history! It is next to the Suriname river and you’ll have a great view of the bridge during clear sky! It’s in the Inner City Of Paramaribo, a UNESCO World Heritage site!

We were fortunate to have an excellent volunteer guide for our recent visit to this Fort. The lady had lots of historical knowledge about the fort and Suriname. We learnt about the French, British and Dutch buildings on this site. There are many interesting exhibits as well as the buildings themselves. There are items from the Amerindians as well as other inhabitants of Suriname. We saw the place where the December murders took place - bullet holes remain in the wall. The guide shared many fascinating stories about the people who had lived here. Highly recommend this place. The museum shop was slightly disappointing - would be enhanced with modern postcards, books about Suriname and other souvenirs. The cafe at the Fort had lovely river views and the food was nice.

We walked around here several times and also went into the Baka Foto restaurant. It was very pleasant to enjoy the sunset observing the river activities. Early in the morning also, before it got hot, it was nice to jog/walk in the area. Historical buildings and the well-kept park added to the beauty of the place.

Not commercial, just a walk from the parks, National Assembly, and presidential palace. Suriname had several colonial rulers but the Dutch left an architectural gem. Local people have carefully restored many buildings for offices, etc. Not overdone - the preservation is one of the best things about Paramaribo.

Cost to get in 10 SRD. They offer a guided tour on Sundays. You can still get quite a bit of info most other days as well. Expect to stay 60 to 90 minutes to see nearly everything. There are holes that show were the people were shot during the December Murders. Look into local history for more information about that. The prison where they were kept is nearby. find the DDD mark on the wall. The meaning of the DDD is within the Fort. There is a resturant and a small gift shop. It was a nice little tour. The down side is that it is still a military site and so it is prohibited to take pictures inside.
