Paramaribo is home to some fantastic architecture and I was really amazed by the old Dutch colonial buildings. There is so much history in Paramaribo and we were shown around town by our friend Danny, a local who was a friend of our AirBnb host.
However, we were so glad we had Danny with us because we felt he kept us safe. We were approached several times, mostly by people looking for money and harassing us, presumably because they thought we were rich in comparison to them. We had a few shaky moments which I won’t go into detail on here, but I would say make sure you do not wander round at night time and make sure you know where not to go.
It was a shame because it tarnished our Paramaribo experience completely, despite how impressive the buildings are.

No high buildings and no multilane highways, but some streets with old atmospheric buildings, old wooden (decayed or burn out) buildings, shopping streets with larger shops and by the bus station small stores, multiple statues, the Palmentuin and by the river historic buildings.

The main attraction of Paramaribo is definitely all the beautiful old dutch architecture. although many were destroyed in the fire in the 19th century.

You must stroll around the historic centre of Paramaribo down to the Waterkant when in Surinam. No wonder this city is on the UNESCO Heritage list. Some stunning buildings. It gets very hot and humid so try and go early in the morning. Best is Sunday morning when there is virtually no traffic in the streets and you can stand in the streets to get good pictures.

Suriname is not only a country with a phantastic nature, since with the old part of its small capital Paramaribo it also possesses a great cultural highlight. To best enjoy it, it makes sense to stay in the only hotel of that town part, the 'Palacio'.

There is not much life in this historic area, hardly any shops or restaurants, but it is very enjoyable to walk in its streets with not too much traffic. Since this old part is not very big, there can be found many shops and eating places just around it, in short walking distance.

Almost all houses are built of wood, clapboard style, with big balconies and steep pitched roofs, also they are painted in white, except for doors and shutters, which are usually kept in dark green. Overall there is a big harmony in this town planned in a grid pattern and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. In comparison with places like Curaçao or along the South African Wine Route I was surprised to not find here the typical decorative gables with curved sides, that one usually associates with Dutch architecture.

This is a capitol city with about 250,000 people so it not surprising there are no skyscrapers here. I went to see the UNESCO inner city but was not particularly impressed. Others have posted photos so you can see what's on offer. They are in various states of disrepair and were lovely in their day.
There appears to be poverty here and one should be alert to your surroundings. I spoke to a fellow traveler (American in his 60's traveling solo on a budget) who was leaving a music venue in Paramaribo at night and turned left instead of right and was set upon by 2 fellows who beat him up and took his mobile phone. This was end of March 2023, he had traveled solo extensively but was now reconsidering his future. Several days after and he was still experiencing mental confusion after the gash on his head. I had read that Suriname was 'safe,' but it's all relative isn't it?

This is an attractive area to wander around. The centre is quite compact and easy to walk around in a morning. Most of the buildings are not accessible so its really a case of wander, look and admire the exterior.

Wandering around the historic centre of Paramaribo is like being in an outdoor museum of architecture. These wooden buildings are beautiful to a visitor, but there must be a struggle to keep them in good repair. In fact many of the buildings show signs of serious neglect. Nevertheless it is a joy to walk along these streets both day and night. Most of the buildings are made of wood and must be a fire risk, but have kept remarkably well maintaining a Dutch style of the 19th centruy.

The entire inner city of Paramaribo is on Unesco's World Heritage list. Take a guided tour and enjoy the beauty of this spectacular place. Some of the buildings are in bad shape and in dire need of renovation but overall you will experience the rich history of old Paramaribo.
