This is the main artery of Asunción, and I realized why while driving down on it. There are so many cool historical houses and buildings on each side, as this is where all the rich people moved to back in the days.

Asuncion has become a very loud city, the traffic is terrible and in the rush hours it might take you 2 hours to get anywhere when only 2 years ago it would have taken you 20 minutes to drive the same distance.

It is a very nice avenue that links downtown to the most important neighbourhood around. You can see beautiful houses and nice places to visit and go such as restaurants and bars.

The Avenida Mariscal Lopez, named after the second president of Paraguay, Francisco Solano Lopez, a most controversial figure, for some a hero, for some a fool, who almost made Paraguay disappear from the map with his war against the triple alliance of the three bigger neighbours..

The whole avenida is 9 kilometers long and definitely the most important artery of the whole city, but of interest for tourists is only the part near the historical center with the cathedral next to it or the old railway Station.

This is the main road to get to downtown Asuncion, and it boasts the official residence of the President, the beautiful cemetery La Recoleta, and other exclusive mansions, some of the abandoned, yet beautiful. Even in high summer is a delight to walk by, as the avenue is filled with trees that change color from season to season. Very safe road,

I took buses 30 and 28.
They both travel along Mariscal Lopez which is a different experience in day and night.
The places looking deserted at night may suddenly look amazing in daytime.
There are beautiful houses and official/private buildings, all protected by surrounding high fences.
Seems quite safe in a zombie attack situation.
Seriously, I walked along this street at night and must admit ghat I was scared. But I never encountered any threats except once by a teenager high on solvent-probably. He left immediately as I started to get serious.
Mariscal Lopez is part of life in Asuncion, therefore it must be experienced.

Fruit and snack sellers and car windshield and window cleaners are abundant and the street sellers jump into the busses.

They seem to be people living a hard life and scratch to earn their living.
Motorcyclists are everywhere and they are unpredictable. So you should watch carefully if you are driving since their protection is quite weak. Many only have simple helmets.
