Golden Triangle Tour

3 reviews
Discover the history and artistic heritage of the ‘Golden Triangle’ villages surrounding Asunción on a private, full-day tour that lets you access parts of Paraguay not usually seen by visitors. See one of South America’s most important pilgrimage sites in Caacupé, browse one-of-a-kind ceramics in Aregua, admire handmade jewelry in Luque, and more. These villages are not easily visited without a car, so a private guide and transport makes it easy to get off the beaten path.

This was definitely my favorite Plaza in Asunción. The place has a ton of character, as well as some cool statues. This is also where one of the most famous restaurant in Asunción, Lido!

I suspect this plaza gets extra pedestrian traffic as it is located in front of the Cabildo, the old legislative building during the dictatorship. The plaza is anchored by a statue of a national hero named Jose Gervasio Artigas.

Although this square is pleasant, there is no overriding reason to visit it as opposed to other squares. Certainly a brief stop is not unrewarded but there is just nothing spectacular about it.

Always a little sad walking past a beautiful park that cannot be entered but I guess that tells its own story.

The Plaza Uruguaya offers a pleasant break from visiting the various sites in the historical center of Asunción. It is a green area with several beautiful trees like flamboyant (in bloom in November). There are several benches to sit on, if they are not occupied by men playing backgammon and drinking téréré, that typical Paraguayan cold version of the maté tea. In the park are some copies of sculptures by Canova and others, and also a more than life size bronze statue of José Gervasio Artigas, the father of Uruguay's Independence, who passed away in exile in Asuncion. One can read that there are quite a few pickpockets in this area. When visiting around lunchtime it was very quiet and far from any kind of danger.
