Right in the heart of the city, this is definitely one of the most beautiful churches in Asunción. This is also the only church/Cathedral that had two towers!

This was the seat of the first diocese of Rio de la Plata. Atop the central door is the emblem of the state, reflecting a period when the state took over the assets of the Roman Catholic church. While the altar is made of silver, the interior is underwhelming. The stained glass is simple, the organ is small and the ceiling is flat. It dates from 1845 and was named after the patron saint of the city.

Although not always open for visits, the church is beautiful and interesting. Although the interior is somewhat spare, the wonderful altarpiece makes the entire visit. Be careful as there is a shanty town in the park directly across the street.

We arrived just as a service was about to begin so we didn't get to closely examine the altar area. The acoustics were good and quite a few people were attending a Monday morning service. The nave was relatively simple.

The historical center of Asuncion is nothing overwhelming, but definetely quite pleasant and a must for anybody interested in this unique country. The cathedral, the main religious building not just of the city, but of all Paraguay, is maybe the most important building of this 'barrio', to which it has even given its name: 'Catedral'.

The cathedral, built - as so much here - during the presidency of Carlos Antonio Lopez in the mid-19th century, faces the Plaza de la Independencia with the Universidad Catolica next to it.

At the front is a relief (presented to Paraguay by the Spanish government in 1965, as it says on an information board next to it), depicting the first governor of the area, Domingo Martinez de Irala (mid-16th century) in a friendly looking contact with a local Guarani chief.

Very nice cathedral - not overly ornate like some in the region do feels like a place of prayer rather than a tourist venue. Interesting that the stations of the cross are all in French - probably donated by France or French order.

but it's scarcely a thrilling experience. It's a quite simple, little-adorned cathedral in comparison to so many in Latin America and Europe. This might be due to the devastating wars that Paraguay has experienced. I suspect that this church was stripped of any lavish adornments that it might have had.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Asunción is the main Catholic temple in town.
It is located in the Downtown, and is part of the historic center of the capital.
It was the first diocese of the Río de la Plata.
It was built during the XIX century and inaugurated in 1845.
Is not the original temple, the first one was built with wood and clay in 1539, but a fire in the city, in 1543, burned down the original church and almost the entire town, by the way.
Probably the most interesting part of the church is the mail altar, completely clad in silver.
If you like history you'll like the place.
