The City Hall with its tower, spire, turrets, columns is a fanciful piece of gothic architecture and definitely one of the most attractive buildings in Georgetown. Unfortunately it is also in a state of disrepair and apparently closed. Although included in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites funds to have it restored don't seem to be around. It is a timber building, except for the cast iron columns and the tiles of the steep roof. Its opening was in 1889. Next to it comes another attractive timber house and then the High Court, which opened two years earlier. This building, with a marble statue of Queen Victoria in front, still gets used as such and has obviously been restored.

This beautiful old building and landmark is in a terrible condition. It should be repaired before it collapses and is lost forever. Georgetown does not have innumerable notable sights - St George's Cathedral (also in a state of decay), the Queen Victoria Law Courts, Parliament Buildings, the Public Library and this Town Hall and these are all precious to the nation. Other Caribbean countries do not have such buildings and these are unique and a tourist attraction. The Town Hall should be repaired using greenheart which would last for a long time.
