thanks to Andrew Carnegie
Feb 2019 • Solo
On one of my walks through the center of Georgetown, I also passed by the National Library in the corner of Church and Main street, opposite the modern Bank of Guyana building. I had a closer look at it from the outside, since it is a quite attractive structure, typical for the Victorian architecture of the British Guiana days. There was an information board in front, giving all kind of details about the construction. Apparently the library could be built thanks to a donation by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and it was opened in 1909.

Play Group Outing
Oct 2016 • Family
I went to the library as part of the playgroup that my son attends, although he was too young for the actual trip. The building is very large with a wide selection of books. We went with nine young children who were not quite at the reading stage, or the sit down quietly stay, or the don't run around stage, but the staff were very accommodating and patient and even helped those who needed the toilet. I am looking forward to heading back there in more calm company.

Research

National library is an experience of a traditional library. The staff were helpful and keen to assist. The library itself is not huge and the range of books limited. We paid for photocopying of some research articles and that was OK. Not air conditioned. Need to put packs in lockers on entry but no charge. Interesting cultural exhibits. A reasonable place to conduct research into Guyana.

Beautiful, historic library building

It all depends on why you are visiting. This library has extensive holdings of local past newpapers and other reference materials. Its book collection, however, is limited by the fact that the library depends on donations. Computer us is limited to internet access but searching the library is done on the old card catalogs.

beautiful library
Aug 2015 • Couples
Beautiful old library, a must see for people who love these kind of antique libraries, and also architectural interests. A beautiful old building, with an amazing staircase that leads up to a reading room and some more old books. Was able to obtain an original copy of Korea's Kim Il Sung's green book!

Nice place if you are having a venue with a small group. The air-conditioning worked well which was pleasant because the weather is very hot!

The National Library of Guyana

The architecture of the National Library of Guyana takes you back to the days when Guyana was under the British Rule.In addition to the excellent books available this library really takes you back in time and gives you that old-fashioned feeling of yesteryear!

this is not the biggest or the best library on the planet, but it has a beautiful atmosphere and has clearly been a local beacon of learning for generations. Well worth a quick visit.

BEAUTIFUL BUILDING
Dec 2014 • Solo
The building is really magnificent as inside as outside, but, unfortunately, the books and titles offered are short in number, considering it is a National Library of an English speaking country. The informatic systems are very poor too.
