The St. George's Cathedral, downtown Georgetown, Guyana, dating to 1842, is reported to be the largest wooden structure in the world. It is certainly the largest that I've ever seen. Inside, there are stained glass windows and statutes of Jesus Christ. I took a number of exterior images from all sides, attached to this review, and one of the interior. The only person that I saw was a very old man who was on the front steps when I took the exterior images. While I was taking the interior images, he approached me and asked for money. I obliged him.

The St. George's Cathedral dominates the skyline of Georgetown along with that of the 6 or 7 story City Hall, also made of wood.

One wonders how difficult it must be to maintain a wooden building in Georgetown's humid climate, which makes it even more impressive that this is the largest wooden structure in the western hemisphere. A must see.

They claim it to be the largest wooden church. Others claim the same but everyone has different measurements so I'm willing to accept their claim. The church isn't in the best of shape but then neither is the country. It has an impressive pipe organ. Inside seems quite large but has some buckets around to catch water from a leaky roof. Still, a good visit

The magnificent gothic architecture displayed in the cathedral wooden structure really impresses our feelings as in delight because of its beauty as in pity before the carelessness the building is suffering in its outside walls as well as in its inside ones. One of Georgetown's most beautiful postcard does not deserve to be treated so recklessly!!!!!
