A little something for everyone
Nov 2018 • Friends
It may be small, but it covers history, ethnology, archaeology, flora and fauna, mining, the Cayenne Penal Colony and so forth. It is an old-style museum with stuffed animals, snakes in jars, and no a/c. Signs are almost entirely in French, but most displays require little interpretation.

Most interesting in my view, the originals of Francis Lagrange's paintings--a convict on Ile Royale--are housed on the second floor. They effectively convey the harshness of prison life in vivid colors. Also interesting is the meticulous scale model of Cayenne in 1789.

Nice butterfly collection

The building itself is nice and located in the centre. The stuffed animals were not very well preserved and all the signs are in French. Upstairs There is a bit of history of cayenne, including a part of history of which they seemed to be very proud. How they defeated the Dutch, oh dear we have done it again! don't forget to go through the corridor to the Butterfly and bugs collection that was the nicest part of the exhibitions. besides that it was the only air-conditioned room.

I found most attractions of French Guiana refer to the history of French here, this museums talks about native culture and way of life here. One can also find life-sized models of animals here. The special section on insects and butterflies kept in drawers is a must see!

Good place to visit
Nov 2014 • Family
Small city, but interesting. We drove all the way from Paramaribo and have some time to visit this place while we were in Cayene. Very nice, exhibit items are properly placed which make the place become more interesting.

Small but interesting
There's not a lot to do in Cayenne and so visiting the 2 museums in the city centre becomes quite an attractive option. This one has an interesting display on prisoners in the Isles du Salut upstairs. Unfortunately all the signs are in French but you get the general idea. Various pickled and stuffed animals downstairs.

Small but worth a visit

It's central--just off the main square. The rooms upstairs give a better sense of history, including the penal colony system. Downstairs you're treated to pickled everything (two headed animals) and stuffed everything (unfortunate animals). A little sideshow-ish, but not a bad option on a slow day.

Midtown, an excellent museum, where you really get a good impression and knowledge of Cayenne's life, flora and fauna. Not pretentious, very good mantained, nice building and an exeptional good collection, specially of insects!! Must do!!
