Since 1836 people have been buried here. For some time the Catholic church was in charge of the cemetery, but after the civil war anyone could be burried here including people who committed suicide or people of another religion. It is proudly stated this place is 'para todos' (for all).

You can observe a major difference between rich and poor deceased. The wealthy families have bigger tombs with some ornamentation, while the very poor have only a very small box in a square block structure. Remarkable are the tombs of different 'sindicatos' whose members are interned in a single construction. The most notable are the ones of the army and the police.

The cemetery is visited by many people bringing flowers and candles. Priests are present to perform rituals. Now Christmas is approaching I saw some Christmas decorations on graves as if to say: you are still with us during this time of celebration..

The central oval of the cemetery is closed.

We went to visit it in one of the most important days..the day of all death, and the principal part was closed (for a few months, they said). The cemetery is interesting and not dirty as it is the area outside. We took Trans Milenio to arrive there and we stopped to the station Central Memorial. The area is not very nice, especially if you try to arrive from the part where the prostitute are staying.

I love cemeteries for the rich history that they contain, and for their peaceful, contemplative atmosphere. This one is a gem, the resting place of important figures in history. My particular love is cemetery iconography and sculpture. I wouldn't say that there were any stunning pieces, nor was the scale as amazing as I have seen in other places. Still, it was still well worth the trip.

Be aware that, given the historical importance of the sight, you will get hassled for taking photographs if you don't get preauthorization first. I don't know what the process is, but it apparently involves applying to an outside office.

I asked if there were guided tours, and the guard told me that the police used to lead tours through but have stopped doing that.

I walked the 2km from my hotel one sunny morning to this large cemetery near a Transmillinio bus station on the busy Avenida de El Dorado. There is a huge horseshoe shaped mausoleum wall that surrounds the most interesting 19th century part of the cemetery that is literally filled with 20th century little square memorials for the dead on the outer part that looks out upon a much larger area of all sorts of more recently dead people. I was able to get in the outer area, which is extensive and fascinating, after signing in with a delightful securidad girl (with whom I had a nice conversation when leaving). But the 19th century interior area enclosed in the horseshoe wall of dead was locked and closed due to repair work. Disappointing, but the big 20th century part of the cemetery was well worth the trip. I learned that Colombia sided with the U.S. in World War II, declared war on the Axis, and sacrificed with their own dead. I am a historian and sociologist and never knew this fact. Explore the unexpected, listen to the dead.

Be aware that it's right next to the Red Light District so you'll possibly meet some shady characters in the area...the cemetery is nice but desolated and without a guide probably not so interesting for most non-colombians

Very sad because I have already come 4 times to pay for masses in the chapel and they never attend and the notice says that the only day the office does not work is Tuesday, I recommend that they leave a person who does comply with the days and times of Pay attention because it happens to many people like me that we waste time. Thank you.
