Our tour group of 15 members was treated to a military procession, instrumental accompaniment of a choir singing the national anthem, and ceremonial “folding of the flag.” We arrived shortly after the ceremony began, so many were crowded near military members performing this somber ceremony. Guards prevented onlookers from getting too close. Of course, we were not permitted to enter the nation’s capitol. Still, the rousing military procession and robust national anthem provided a good photo op.

Takes up an entire side of the massive Plaza Bolivar with the Cathedral across from it. Houses part of the government Influenced by European government buildings of the early 20th century. Can't go in unless you have official business

Located on the Plaza de Bolivar, has many histories that can be heard from the many historians you´ll find in the square, from a really low rate. This is a very important political site.

The Plaza has three major buildings surrounding it, and the Capitolio is one of the nicest architectural design there. The Roman columns gives it all its charm, as well as the large Horse statue of Bolivar standing in front of it.

Finally completed in 1926 after 80 years of construction work, the Capitolio Nacional is meant to symbolize the solidity and robustness of Colombia's national independence. Remarkable is the ruling class at the time was very much inspired by European culture and for instance did not bother much about incorporating indigenous elements. The result is a rather conventional neoclasical giant similar to buildings in Europe.

In the stone courtyard there is a statue of Mosquera, Colombia's most renowned 19th century general and politician. He had a metal jaw, due to injuries sustained during battle against the Spanish. Perhaps the reason he looks very serious.

At the south of the main Bogota Plaza, this impressive building holds the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Definitely worth stopping to see, you can't actually visit the building inside and you'll find it guarded by heavily armed police in full body armour. Not exactly welcoming.

The Capitol is one of the buildings surrounding the Bolivar Square so is you go to the square, is impossible to miss it. Be careful of pickpockets and people who will try to get close to you by telling you the story of the building and such.

Perched on Plaza de Bolivar in front of the Presidential Palace, this is one of the most grand and picturesque buildings on the square.
