Our Overseas Adventure Travel group enjoyed this Baroque colonial neighborhood, with an excellent local guide. Narrow streets harken to a colonial time. Festive painted buildings enhance the flavor. It’s not necessary to have a guide but explanation about preservation and restoration of the barrio is a learning experience. In Bogotá, this is a must-see neighborhood ringed by towering mountains.

Loved the vibe, not at all edgy as some reviews suggest. That said, not a place to wander at night. Easy access to great museums, most are free or have concessions and are beautifully presented. The joy however is happening upon little bars and restaurants and taking a trip up to Monserrate.

We got to like the place the longer we stayed and the more we explored
The architecture is lovely and the area is packed with most if not all of the sights of Bogotá. Large number of museums and plenty of public buildings, churches etc
Lots of cafes, bars and restaurants and a few shops. There is a huge number of street vendors but they do not hassle you
Only place to stay in Bogotá in my view

Walking through these streets throws you back in time. This neighborhood is very old, interesting and amazing. We saw it in daytime. A must to see.

As a Youtube content creator, one of the things I like to do is go to where the real people of a given city live and hangout. Candelaria definitely has some tourists, but generally it's mainly locals who are out going to bars, restaurants or chilling. I really enjoyed walking along the small narrow streets with our local tour and learning about the history of Bogota which started as a small square in the area. I felt that the place was safe to walk around in and was able to meet some really interesting people as a women's performance art festival was going on at the time.

Take in the sights of this very old neighborhood in Bogota.
Loved the wood carved balconies.
Nice wide street to walk on and a fair amount of shops to enjoy as well.
A must visit to experience Bogota.

Do you feel secure, safe, walking the streets of La Candelaria in the morning? Early evening?

My wife, myself and 12 year old son felt fine day and night. We would be out till 10pm or 11pm and walk back to our rented apartment. That said we are from NYC. I grew up in NYC. My wife and son can speak Spanish.
I found the area perfectly safe. One just needs to be aware of their surroundings as in any city. I find that the travel books always lean to the side of caution since they do not know who their readers are.
Hope this helps. Anymore questions, do not be afraid to ask

Is the Cite Hotel located in the area?

I'm not sure of your desired "adventure level"... I've stayed in both Chapinero (where The Cité Hotel is located) and in Candelaria. Here's the thing... during the day, Candelaria is wonderful. The old buildings, the shops, restaurants... just the thing you want. But when the sun goes down, the vibe changes drastically. All of a sudden, this cool, exciting area turns menacing. If you are big and not afraid to talk your way out of trouble, then go for it. I've never been harmed there, but I have been harassed there. You may find that staying in Chapinero is the best option for you. It is safe and an easy taxi ride will get you to Candelaria during the daytime, and you can retreat to your hotel and for the night hours in a safer area.
