- Kevin SPontypridd, United Kingdom6,243 contributionsNice plazaThe main square in the city home to Catedral Primada on one side, Colombia’s Houses of Congress another and Palacio Lievano, now the mayor’s building a third side it is a large square with some impressive build-ings. But with no access to most and so large while being devoid of cafes or restaurants it would be bland were it not for the people on a weekend. Performers, stalls selling food, protesters outside their parliament building, families out for the day. Just a lively city square.Visited January 2023Written February 9, 2023
- DeanMurphy2020Orlando, Florida7,548 contributionsaka Bolívar SquareNamed for Simón Bolívar, who led Colombia to independence in 1819, this enormous plaza is lined with significant structures, including Catedral Primada de Bogotá, Colombia’s legislative [congress] building, and the National Capitol. This of this as DC’s eastern side of The Mall. It is a lively, open area with spectacular mountain views. Street vendors and entertainers populate the space. Perhaps because of the January cold and damp, there were more pigeons than locals and tourists. The Plaza is the center of modern Bogotá. A must-see site.Visited January 2023Traveled with friendsWritten April 12, 2023

This is the most signature plaza in Bogota. We arrived around 9am on a Monday - the day after voting day - so they were still some leftover tents still around.
There are a ton of vendors in the plaza - early in the morning there were vendors selling corn to feed the pigeons and some llamas around for children's rides. Later in the afternoon, there were a ton of food carts selling drinks, fruit, baked goods, etc. There were also a lot of street performers in the plaza as well. We saw a high school marching band performing, which was really cool.
Do be careful of your wallets and phones, as it does get super crowded and I'm sure pickpockets around.

This is the main plaza of the city and is surrounded by some governmental buildings. Noted some small groups demostrators demonstrating here. One of the groups are the indigenous who came from a village. A great place for photo stop.

Was raining heavily during my visit but I had no regret busily finding shelter for the scattered pours.
It is definitely a must-see if one is here visiting Bogota.
Many heritage buildings and eateries to explore.
If you are tired, just stop by a cafe to "get recharged".
I found one and will post it under a separate post.

Plaza Bolivar makes for a great orientation point to explore La Candelaria.
It's a bit run down, yes, but still splendid in its own tired colonial way. The cathedral is a stunner and the buildings that line it have such character.
A few are in disrepair and the statue of Bolivar in the centre has definitely seen better days. With a bit of a face-lift it has such potential to be a try beautiful plaza.
Still, it's a great place to hang out a d has a good buzz about it by day anyway, I wasn't there by night.

The actual plaza is nothing special in my opinion other than a bunch of hustlers trying to get you to take pictures with them or take a picture of you and then expecting a tip afterwards. Nothing against people hustling but when we say no, leave us alone please. Also, the pigeons are absolutely everywhere and don't give a fork where you're trying to walk!

This square is large and bordered by the major buildings of all State institutions. It’s general ambiance is however pretty poor. Very empty and unappealing, except maybe for the zillions of pigeons. Impossible to miss if you stroll close to the Candelaria.

Plaza Bolívar is in the center of La Candelaria, the old colonial town of Bogotá. There are several nice attractions in the neighborhood like the cathedral, the Museo Botero, The Museo Santa Clara and the Presidential Palace. It is named for Simón Bolívar, the leader of the effort to liberate Colombia and its neighbors from Spain and establish democratic government.
The Plaza itself, however, is pretty ordinary and one should be particularly careful of pick-pockets and others who might pray upon tourists.
Enjoy the sights near-by but don't waste a lot of effort on seeing this plaza.
