About
The Banco de la República Gold Museum houses one of the most important collections of pre-Hispanic metallurgy in the world. As its history, which dates back to 1939, has unfolded, so this institution has become a symbol of Colombia's cultural memory. Its golden exhibition, fully renewed in November, 2008, is a place you cannot miss in your next trip to Bogota.

    Worthwhile to visit.
This is an interesting museum, covering the history of Colombia as it relates to the use of gold. I liked the exhibits, and this is a very nice museum. It may not be everyone's cup of tea. But I was with a tour guide who definitely knew what he was talking about. So that helped a lot. Overall, I would definitely recommend anyone visiting Bogota to stop by this museum. I definitely enjoyed my visit.

    Well worthwhile!
Very well done museum. Enough to look at especially representations to explain pieces in 3rd floor. Second floor showing pieces from different regions was a little overwhelming given our limited time. I’d go again just for better look at 2nd floor. Make sure to see the 5-7 min display in the theater. It was so cool.

It's a great museum. In terms of the grandeur of the collection on par with the Larco Museum in Lima. The Metropolitan Museum collection of Central American gold (which has a few excellent pieces and is probably the best one in the US) is not even close. The admission is CLP 5000 (~$1), seniors free.

Interesting museum to understand the history of Colombia, traditions, beliefs and golden craftsmanship.
Wonderful museum about the history of gold mining and golden artifacts of various areas of Colombia. Nice presentation of the historical usage of golden artifacts by chamans, connecting to spiritual beliefs of local tribes. Well explained different techniques they used alongside centuries to work with gold.

    Lavish displays
The museum is centrally located and not far from Plaza de Bolivar. It has many floors of fantastic gold and other metal exhibits. It is a fair price and has options such as an audio guide or a personal guide to show you around. Or, you can just wander by yourself if you wish. I do recommend visiting Lake Guatavita first, as you will have a better understanding of the indigenous people who made and wore the gold jewellery and how the gold ties in to the ceremonies at the lake from ancient times.

Man alive for gold. Lots of gold to drool over throughout history. Very well presented and well lit. You can photograph whatever you see. The museum is operated by the Banco de la Republica (Central Bank of Colombia).

Well worth it and a bargain
This place was a pleasant surprise. We had a day to kill in Bogota on the way to fish for peacock bass so we spent a day at the museum and wandering around the area. Great experience and a pleasant surprise for me. The area also has fun shopping and food vendors

    Must see whilst in Bogota
Probably the most visited place in Bogota and perhaps Colombia overall. Lots of beautiful, historic pieces. The intricacy and detail of some are incredible. There are also a couple of the statues from San Agustin and from one of the tombs in Tientendtro. It's not a huge place but you will need a minimum of an hour. There are explains for each cabinet in both Spanish and English and its only 5,000 COP entry.

    Amazing history and beautiful exhibits
Amazing deep dive into pre-colonial history, shown through the largest collection of gold artifacts in the world. Such beautiful artwork - leaves you wondering how much was lost to the Spaniards. Audio guide is very helpful.

We tried to visit the Gold Museum just before Christmas and were disappointed to see that visitors were restricted to 10% of normal levels and you had to pre-book to get in. Some people had turned up at 9am to try their luck at getting in and a handful were able to get in after waiting 3 hours.

Imagine our surprise when we left Bogota airport on 10 Jan 2021 and visited the El Dorado business class lounge. These amazing Gold Museum artifacts were displayed there instead... see photo!

You can learn a lot about the ancestral history of Columbia her and view some amazing ancient treasures. Unfortunately my family felt they were being followed excessively by the staff and they did not enjoy it. I can not attest to this as I spent most of my time reading and viewing and not on whether or not I was being followed. I would recommend you take a tout to Gautavita lagoon before going to the Gold museum as there is a historical link to a lot of the items you see and the lagoon.

The museum leads narrative about gold in a slow pace of dark chambers. The gold is a thread in the pre-colonial history of Colombia and we walked along its shining line through the darkness. I liked focus on wealth of skills, culture and art. It contrasts with a simple greed of European conquerors. Good shop with artesan produce of Colombia....

Whether you're interested in gold history or not, this is a good pause in the middle of your downtown walk. Free on Sundays, the Gold Museum is a nice place to get to know about the pre-hispanic culture, how our indigenous ancestors managed to create art with zero technology, and how the native communities lifestyle as shaped by their beliefs (in nature and in their gods).
Nice place to visit. Clean restrooms. Good WiFi (which is super important for travelers without a local simcard, of course).
I just recommend not buying crafts nearby, because they are extremely overpriced. Same as restaurants nearby. Just walk a couple of blocks (or 5 ot 6) and you'll find the same things, at a much better price.

When I was waiting in line for the Gold Museum, I didn't think I wanted a tour guide. But something made me change my mind in the last minute and I told Enrique Molina that I could do the shortest 1 hour tour because I had a flight to catch. We ended up talking for almost 3 hours (he never asked me to pay more but I ended up paying him for the 3 hour price because it was well worth it). He is a retired engineer so he understands the metallurgy, and he was a fixer for international businessmen coming to Colombia when it was dangerous in the 90s so he learned from the best world renowned museum experts that these business people hired. He is also part of the Muizca Indian himself and has interviewed and filmed the discoverer of the El Dorado raft. He has also studied anthropology and understands the symbolism of the art in great detail and could talk for much longer than 3 hours if you have the time and it would be very interesting and enjoyable.

I highly recommend you reach out to him (if you don't see him with his gray beard and glasses when you are waiting in line).

Large collection of gold of many regions and periods in Colombia, very well presented and explained. It has really a lot of interesting pieces so you need some time to visit. Be aware that this museum is always very busy and can get crowded, however it is a must when you visit Bogota.

Definitely worth a visit. The name implies you’ll only see gold, and it’s definitely orientated around that. But there’s also a plethora of other artefacts from indigenous Colombia cultures and peoples. All exhibits are in Spanish and English, so you can get around on your own easily enough. But I highly recommend using the free tours the museum provide (again, English and Spanish) because they add so much context and the guides were wonderful.

Also, free day sounds great but for only COP$4000 or USD$1 just get the ticket :)

I went on free-entry Sunday, and it wasn't worth it! Sure it may be big, and they have many objects, but it was seriously lacking in context and interest.
Most of the exhibition is glass cases of gold objects. Some old, some very old. But there was almost no explanation of what exactly you are looking at. Every flipping thing looked the same, was displayed the same, and described the same! They could have rearranged everything and it would make no difference. It was display after display of near identical artifacts! No history or explanation at all!
There were a couple areas supposedly about gold production or anthropology, but it looks like they were only half finished before the builders quit.
Good luck finding your way around this place too. The wall diagrams made looking for a stairway or ext even more confusing. The elevators too, seemed to skip floors, open doors, and freeze at random.
The gift shop was some seriously overpriced kitsch.
If you simply have to go, do so on a free day and be glad you didn't pay for this abomination.

We visited the Gold Museum on our recent visit to Bogota and was blown away. It was absolutely fantastic! First, prices are right. I think cost of admission was roughly $1 USD and rental of the English audio guide was $2 per guide.

The museum was really well laid out and it had so many interesting artifacts. It's truly amazing how the native peoples of Colombia managed to engineer all the items in the museum.

We spent about 3.5 hours going through all the exhibits and never felt bored.

All of the displays are in both Spanish and English and there is an audio guide also available. The exhibit on the Balsa Muisca and the adjacent room with multimedia presentation were a highlight for us. We spent 3 hours here and would highly recommend it!
