The former Palace of Justice was sieged in 1985 by M-19, a leftist nationalist guerrila group (now a political party). Earlier in 1980 M-19 had sieged the Dominican Republic embassy which after negotiations ended peacefully. Perhaps M-19 had anticipated a similar scenario. This time their siege ended in a massacre, after it was decided to send to army in. More than 100 people died in the crossfire and subsequent blaze. The building was turned into a ruin.

The present-day modern structure was completed in 2004. For obvious reasons security around the building is heavy.
