The Palace sits facing the Plaza and is an impressive historical building that sounds out due to its sheer size, colour and flags.

If you just look at the building from outside, you miss every thing. You need to know about the history before making superficial judgments. Think about Troy, the Greek historical fortress (now in Turkey): if you visit it today, the remains are unimpressive, but if you know the history you look at it with intelligent eyes, the eyes of culture. The same happens with the Palacio Quemado in La Paz, the government palace that was burned in 1875 and has witnessed some of the most important historical events in Bolivian history, like the hanging of Pedro Domingo Murillo in 1810 and President Villarroel in 1946, the suicide of President Busch in 1939, the killing of presidents Isidoro Belzu in 1865 and Agustín Morales in 1872, all while in office; military coups and uprisings. Although government buildings existed at the same place since 1561 President Belzu inaugurated the current structure in 1853. Inside, where I've been several times (but tourists cannot visit), the palace has a beautiful pillared patio with an impressive staircase that leads to the presidents’ offices and the Mirrors Hall, the Presidents Hall and the Red Hall. So, in short, if you just look at it from outside, you know very little about the palace.

I was expecting something way more grand. It's location is in a square & you can literally walk right up to it. There was a quick changing of the guard & the soldiers took it as a joke as they laughed through the process. How can one take them seriously after witnessing that?!

Right on the Plaza Murillo, this grandiose, yellow and white building is certainly imposing and architecturally, one of the highlights of La Paz. From the outside. Alas, visitors are nor permitted to visit.

Only saw it from the outside, but red-exterior with the White windows looked quite stunning.... also the guards in a smart uniform, gave character to the place. With offices and receptions rooms in such a splendid building the Presidential staff must be highly, motivated to do good work for the country! The entire Plaza Murillo gave me the feeling of peace and tranquility!

I love visiting Plaza Murillo, which contains the Presidential Palace, or the "Placio Quemado" or the "Burnt Palace" as it was once burnt down. Have a photo taken with the Colorado Guards at the front door; they are very friendly. Then walk across the street to the plaza and look at the ornate light pole opposite the palace. A former President, Gualberto Villarroel, was hung from this light pole after he refused to die when he was thrown from the top floor of the Palace onto the road by an angry mob in 1946. A dangerous job being a President here! Diagonally opposite from the Palace is a white building of about 3 floors. There are marks in the plaster on the front of the building. These are bullet holes from a gun battle between the police and army about 20 years ago. La Paz's main Cathedral is next to the Palace and the Houses of Congress are on the other side of the Palace. A beautiful place to stroll around on a sunny day.

It's a beautiful building right at Murillo Square. We only observed from the square. We understand you can have your picture taken with the guards but didn't do so. Seemed like an imposition to us.

It was unbelievable that the Vice President of Bolivia would be so gracious to invite 30 plus Americans and a Canadian on a Tour of the Presidential Palace. Not planned but it was such a thrill. Quite interesting and we saw the comparable US West Wing. Thanks again Mr Vice President

This palace is found in Murillo Plaza in downtown La Paz and is close to several other important government buildings. It is worth a visit to the plaza to take in the entire area.
