I love visiting Plaza Murillo, which contains the Presidential Palace, or the "Placio Quemado" or the "Burnt Palace" as it was once burnt down. Have a photo taken with the Colorado Guards at the front door; they are very friendly. Then walk across the street to the plaza and look at the ornate light pole opposite the palace. A former President, Gualberto Villarroel, was hung from this light pole after he refused to die when he was thrown from the top floor of the Palace onto the road by an angry mob in 1946. A dangerous job being a President here! Diagonally opposite from the Palace is a white building of about 3 floors. There are marks in the plaster on the front of the building. These are bullet holes from a gun battle between the police and army about 20 years ago. La Paz's main Cathedral is next to the Palace and the Houses of Congress are on the other side of the Palace. A beautiful place to stroll around on a sunny day.

It's a beautiful building right at Murillo Square. We only observed from the square. We understand you can have your picture taken with the guards but didn't do so. Seemed like an imposition to us.
