You can drive up or hike, just be aware some taxi drivers may not take you to the very top or come all the way up to pick you back up. Once you get to the base you can climb all the way to the very top which makes you feel like an extreme rock climber when really you're just mildly terrified of falling to your demise. If you go at night, you can make a fire with your friends and tell ghost stories and see the lights of La Paz. 10/10 would most likely recommend. I would suggest not going by yourself though because there can sometimes be creepers up there. Just be aware.

Steepish initial climb until you get to the valley at the top with the Muela and spire-like mountains. You can walk on the car path which is a little longer, or take short cuts up the hill which have trodden paths, however it is steeper.
The views on the way up looking back to La Paz are great, but walking into the valley was really special, as well as the view from the Muela. I went to the base of the Muela, but didnt climb it because the 3rd w/e of carnaval was on and I wanted to go see it.
You walk through a very small village before getting to the Muela, there are two roads, the one that goes around to the left has two epic pot holes that would end a happy day for those in vehicles, better take it slow. The road is not wide at some points.
The path through the village has a very steep section, I saw a car try to go up it and slide back down!! Not safe without a 4-wheel drive.
I walked through the town and a dog came charging at me out of nowhere, I was unhappily startled so picked up a stone and let it rip, that little guy might be more cautious next time.
Animal rights person? well some dogs came after me on a Puno hill whilst I had my backpack on, I hurt my back dealing with them, so it's been no mercy since.

Devils tooth is a wonderful hike from zona sur in La Paz, though now there are roads to take you to the base. From "la muela" you can see to the other side of the andes, the illimani and you can also see upwards towards La Paz and el Alto. The tooth itself is a very interesting rock formation. Civilization is rapidly encroaching on it which is sad. I do recommend going up if you have time.

Take the Bus from the San Francisco Church that takes you close to the cemetery of San Pedregal. from there you can walk all the way up the mountain. It will takes you arround 1-2 hours to reach the top. Its just a half day trip if you start early at the morning. After your return in San Pedregal it would be easy to combine the trip with the public transport to the Valle de la Luna or the green and yellow railway.

Ok, so this is not so tough a walk like the El Choro Trek (I did this hike a week or so after the El Choro Tail), but it involves a bit of walking. If you are coming from the city centre, look for a vehicle that is going to Los Pinos, Pedregal. The van will leave you at the village that is 'nearby'. You will have to find your way to the village at the foot of this hill. Since the route to the Muela del Diablo is not marked, it is wise to either have a guide or ask around as you head up. The village where the minibus leaves you often has random dogs that might be dangerous so watch out for that.
As you go up the hill, you will enjoy the specatular view of La Zona Sur and the city of La Paz in general. It is a dry, dusty hike so be sure to carry your own water and snacks. You can also buy at the first village. The village at the foot of the hill only had one lady selling drinks and she was only selling the large 2L and above bottles. Since one is not sure whether or not they will find someone selling stuff here, you are better off buying before getting here. The features on the way are breath taking. Once you get to the Muela, you have the option of going to the very top, which is steep with falling stones on certain sides, but the view at the top is worth the effort. Alternatively, you can have your picnic and head back home.
It is about an hour's walk from the first village. Alternatively, you can take a taxi to take you to the Muela del Diablo, then hike to the top.

Muela del Diablo is a nice rock formation in the south part of La Paz. Public Buses take you only so far. You will be dropped in one of the (poorer) outskirts of southern La Paz. You will have to walk up at least an hour. It's an interesting walk to get a glimps of life on the hills of La Paz... if not washed away by any floods... At the 'entrance', great views down on the city. Locals use the slopes along side the road for downhill cross cycling. Not to good for the environment but spectacular. From entrance another half an hour or more to the actual rock of Muela del Diablo. Steep climb up. Don't know if it is doable without equipment. Saw pictures of climbing sets (?) in the rock, so should be nice place for rock climbing. Should also be able to do a little bit of hiking, day trips in surrounding. Nice landscape. There are some farms and a school nearby, but no shops spotted so bring everything you need.

Crazy people walk up ( never try the first three days in La Paz). Others take a taxi ( you can negotiate a round trip ride but about $30-35). Third way to see it relatively up close is by teleférico. If you go up you'll get absolutely great views on either side of Andes. We opted for fourth way, my son who works here for USG drove us up.

I'm referring to myself, lol. I'm aware that some people advocate walking to and from this, however I opted for a car from my hotel. That worked for me. I suspect that you could get a local taxi to take you, wait, and return you to La Paz. From Casa Grande it was 180 bolivianos. The views are spectacular. I climbed about halfway up. As others have mentioned it is loose gravel and a fall would be unpleasant. But this is doable and enjoyable for the middle-aged among us.

I asked a local taxi in Zona Sur to take me up to the village/suburb of Chairake. From here one can walk the last 1.5 km or so to the rock itself. SCRAMBLING UP THE ROCK IS DANGEROUS. The view of La Paz once scaled is decent, but do be careful, the rock is v crumbly and one can easily slip and fall 4-5 meters. I wouldn't recommend doing this if you are not in good shape and have a good sense of balance/coordination. No, really, it's dangerous. The views down the other side are of the valley which starts with further out La Paz suburbs of Mallasa & Jupapina, they seem tiny some 1500m below you. This then turns to countryside.
It is possible to follow the trail down this side of the mountain and pick up the main (and only significant) road heading back to La Paz. A local bus or shared taxi can be caught easily from this road as many Bolivians commute from this valley to the city to work etc. Walking down takes about 2hrs and there is nothing on route by way of water/shops so make sure you go prepared. This valley is also normally at least 5oc hotter than La Paz owing to its lower altitude.

More than the Muela itself, what really amazes is the path to the Muela from the main avenue at the bottom of the mountain.
Once you're there, enjoy the magnificent view from the top.
You can also climb the Muela del Diablo, if the whether allow you to do so!

la zona es bastante segura claro siempre es preferible ir acompañado , el peligro real radica en que esta trasmano , que la movilidad escasea y que el asenso a la muela se hace por un sendero precario
