La Mano de Punta del Este is found on Playa Brava and is notably the most famous sculpture in Uruguay. Whilst the sculpture is well worth checking out, the beach isn't overly impressive and is quite a pain to walk on, with areas of sharp shells. Despite this, the majority of the beach is soft sand and is a nice place in which to sit and relax with ocean views.

My wife was mugged by two men on a motor bike at mid-day on the main beach road. When they grabbed her bag she was pulled off her bicycle. She suffered severe lacerations to her head, a broken shoulder and severe abrasions to both arms and both legs. I called 911 and tried to get an ambulance but they refused to send one. The police arrived and they refused to call an ambulance even though my wife was covered in blood and was only partially conscious. The owner of the bike shop came and graciously took her to the Hospital ER where she was treated, including 11 sutures on her forehead.

The beach is full of activity. Everyone was enjoying the sun while others were taking pictures of the famous hand. There are several shops and you can just take your time and enjoy the beach.

When one side has wind you go to the other side to sunbathe , to swim ...to surf ....to walk ...the great beaches of Punta Del este are twofold ..".Mansa " side : mostly calm waters for safe swimming with children and the "Brava " side : a heaven for enthusiast of all water sports ....including swimming with the waves ...walking on the endless beach ..., white sand and enjoying the dunes !!!!!!!! And people watching !!!!

Playa Brava is definitely the best location of Punta having the south Atlantic ocean right in front! Beautiful villas along the coast, is a magnificent location very well preserved and maintained. Pleasure to visit, discover and explore!

With the Strong Atlantic winds and currents this area provides fantastic waves for surfing and frolicking. The beach area though it goes through physical changes is lovely with fantastic views and a blustery peacefulness about it. Restaurants are available and the area is enhanced with many pieces of outdoor art including the Iconic Los Dedos Playa Brava . If you are not a strong swimmer enjoy the beach and the sights whether mobile or stationary ! ! !

This is the ocean side of the PdE peninsula, and so the waves tend to be bigger more frequently, since it is actually the open ocean (unlike the "mansa" side).
It's still a largely undeveloped area.

While the beach was long sandy, it was crowded at 11am. I ended up at Brava because of the cruise she was almost impossible to et a photo with all the people posing and claiming the fingers. Don't need to see this "hot spot" again.
