I think many people forget that Qatar is a desert country, preferring instead to concentrate on urban pleasures. That is OK, but, to really enjoy the country, one ought to blend the natural environment with man-made pleasures. At least in the more temperate months between November to April.
Taking a desert safari over-night expedition makes you realise the beauty and silent blackness the desert has to offer. According to me, the dune-bashing experience in Land-cruisers was only a pre-cursor to the over-night experience in the camp-site and the early morning the next day by the inland sea, where we paddled and enjoyed the serenity on offer.
I guess this is from a middle-aged, family-orintated perspective

We had a great day out in the desert. They picked us up outsider our hotel in the morning and after about one hour We arrived at the desert where we were offered to try some camel riding and some Tea. After the short ride the fun began. It was time to get in the 4x4 Landcruiser and hit the dunes. We had a great driver, Shahab, who did his best to scare us but it was just great fun and we really enjoyed it and We felt totally safe with his driving skills.

I went with Qatar Ventures on an overnight desert trip with a group of colleagues. The trip included, 'dune bashing' and a visit to their camp site on the beach south of Doha.

Initially, the dune bashing was very enjoyable, our experienced driver knew how deliver the right mix of thrills to be expected.

The overnight stay at their camp site however was a complete farce. They have built a rather extensive site by the sea, which is impressive in its own way. But the staff they have there are utterly atrocious. The only English that they speak is "Service Charge" and they will not lift a finger without demanding a tip.

I had been on the site about fifteen minutes before one of the staff began to ask me for "English money, give me English money" which was rather uncomfortable. Despite paying 380QR per person this cost didn't seem to include anything on site except a rather dry selection of meats for dinner, that had clearly been cooked off site and brought out there.

There was no camp fire, there was no bbq, we brought our own cable to plug the group ipad into the sound system for our entertainment (otherwise their choice of music is shameful) - but at about 9.30pm it was switched off. We went over to see what had happened and found that the staff were attempting to install a larger hifi system, with mixed success. After serious questioning they finally revealed that there was "a Qatari party tomorrow night" that required a larger hifi - it didn't occur to them that they were ruining our evening. After some duress they agreed to wait until the morning and sloped off like sulky children.

To top it all at 11.17pm our host came over to our table and announced "now is your sleep time" and promptly switched off the generator. There was rain in the night and the tent roofs were full of holes. Oh and you get a dirty sleeping bag and an uncomfortable attempt at a bed roll to sleep on.

If you have read this far you will be unsurprised that I would not recommend Qatar Ventures' Overnight Desert Safari.

The first component of this overnight trip was a white-knuckle ride into the Qatar wilderness in modern Toyota 4x4s driven very competently by our Qatari Airways Pilot, Mohammed.
At no time did I feel in danger as we were thrown backwards and forwards into sideways drifts, wheel spins and crazy descents down and across the stunning Desert landscape.
We stopped for some photo opportunities and didn't feel rushed to get back in the cars.
This was the highlight of the trip, if only it lasted longer-we were picked up at 1400, packed and on the road by 1415 for the 45 min plus trip out to the edge of the sand dunes.
Sunset in early January is around 1630 so you get barely 90 mins to see the wild landscapes.
I feel an earlier pick up facilitating a longer time spent amongst the Dunes with perhaps a little bit of Natural History thrown in and a snack stop would make this part of the trip really worth it.
The second half of the trip was less than brilliant.
The overnight seaside camp was fairly run down, looking like a post-Apocalyptic Mad Max scene when we rocked up. Our party of nine had the place to ourselves but we were hardly waited on hand and foot. A little more hospitality instead of certain party members being harangued for cash handouts would go a long way.
It was a cold onshore wind but the hosts refused to light the FirePit which was decidedly strange.
Food was very basic but at least it was cooked. Tea/Coffee and cold drinks were very basic: a cooler of soft drink cans and bottled water and a kettle with packets of instant coffee and carton milk arranged haphazardly on a table top.
Unfortunately they ran out of coffee packets for us for breakfast and with only a party of nine,
I feel that's unacceptable considering how much the trip cost individually.
The place needed a good tidy up with litter and plastic bags surrounding the camp, and taking all this into account, I can't really recommend this camp for Overnight trips but highly recommend the Dune Bashing if it is available without the Camp component.

The first half hour of our trip was lost while we went into the Corniche Area to refuel. Moussa our guide had all the rods & equipment, while we were given hand lines. He caught fish, none of the 8 customers did. It was nice to get out on the water but on previous fishing trips I’ve done around the world, the focus is on the customers having a good time, that wasn’t our experience today

If you are a person who has never been on a desert safari or has never tried a buggy ride, then this is the place. We can take small 3 wheelers of various capacities and enjoy the rides. If this is going to be your first ride, please ensure there is someone to monitor you.

We were very disappointed. Our driver could not find where to pick us up, despite having VERY specific instructions - in fact, we walked to a local Lulu market to meet him and still had to wait. He drove fast (up to 150KMs) to the desert while using his mobile constantly. Once there, nothing was described or explained. For instance, we went to a compound, told we had 10 minutes, with no explanation of what it was, what to do or why we were there. At other times, we were dropped off, told we had 5 minutes and that was it. The tour was suppose to be from 2-6:00pm. We were back at the apartment by 5:30pm.

My brother and I enjoyed an excellent trip to the inland sea. The driver made us feel very safe even when flying up and down the dunes in his Land Cruiser. It was a shame to see litter at the inland sea, but this isn’t the fault of this company. I’d highly recommend this company for such a tour. The price was better value than other companies that I asked.
