7k Walk along the Corniche
Jun 2020 • Family
The Corniche is a waterfront promenade which runs along the Doha bay to the city. It is a really popular place for walkers, skaters, joggers and generally people who just want to stroll.

At the beginning of The Corniche is Sheraton Park, there is also a children’s play area, café, and a green area where you can sit and relax under the shade of the trees.

There’s also a car park, this tends to get full very quickly at certain times of the day (usually the evenings). In 2017, there were parking bays that ran alongside the front of the Corniche, but due to the ongoing construction have been taken away.

Further along the Corniche, at certain times you can see people fishing in the clear water, there’s also a small little beaches for paddling, however, no swimming is allowed.

There are tourist dhows that will take you on a trip to several other locations dotted along the Corniche. If there is a group of you, you can possibly haggle a good price.

Further along, is Al Bidda Park, this is on the opposite side of the road. Here there is a children’s play area, with open space perfect for picnics and you can also buy refreshments.

Continuing along the Corniche you will come across the Emirs palace, which is the official home of the Qatar Government, there is Doha Port, which also has parking and The National Museum of Qatar, where you can learn a lot about the country’s heritage. There is an remarkable pearl sculpture as well as many other sculptures along the way. The Museum of Islamic Art, which alongside arabic artworks displays artworks from all over the world.

You will evidently also reach Souq Waqif, where you can fined the Falcon Souq, nearby horse and camals, many shops and stalls, and plenty of restaurants to suit a variety of palettes.

Be prepared when walking along the Corniche, apart from the one cafè there are no facilities. Walk with water. If you are going to walk the full 7k, wear trainers or appropriate walking foot wear.

Doha's popular outdoor area
Mar 2020
Besides the Souq Wakif my favourite outdoor area in Doha is the Corniche, the walkway by the Bay of Doha. In total it stretches for about 7km from the National Museum to the Sheraton Hotel.

The most popular stretch of the Corniche is the one near the Museum of Islamic Art towards the Dhow Harbour. Behind the walking area with stone slabs of different colours, forming patterns, is in parts a lawn with palm trees, where especially on Fridays people meet and sit around. Most of them being young expats working here, the greatest number probably from countries of the Indian peninsula.

In this part is also the Pearl Monument, a popular photo spot, and the fountain with a sculpture of traditional water pots. From here one has great views across the bay towards the impressive skyline of high rises in the new business district of West Bay.

Hardly a coastal city on the Arabian peninsula is without its 'Corniche'. There are several in Saudi-Arabia and the UAE, there is Matrah Corniche near Muskat, Oman and also Kuwait City has its corniche. The word comes from the French Riviera, where there still is the most famous Corniche of all, originally meaning a road between see and mountain, derived from the Italian word 'cornice' (cliff). From here the expression travelled to Egypt and Beirut, then the Arabian peninsula, meaning a passage by a waterfront, something which otherwise is usually called an 'Esplanade' or 'Promenade'.

The Corniche

Great for walking and running at the same time. It's a nice place as well to unwind and to collect your thoughts. You can either have a picnic or just stroll along the harbor.

What an amazing beach.. A good walkway through the beach which is more than 3 KM. Good boating facility. At night time, getting a fantastic panoramic view with lots of lights. You can do the fishing on the beach.

Coastal promenade with great views of the city skyline of Doha
Feb 2020 • Business
We drove along the Corniche on our way from the airport to the Sheraton Hotel. It is a crescent shaped promenade along the harbor lined with old pearl diving boats that are now used for excursions. From the Islamic Art Museum, there are some spectacular views of the skyline of Doha with its variety of modern designed skyscrapers.
