Historical place for the modern art museum.
It was nice that Eman Al-Musallam was there and she explained the history of the building.
There were too many art pieces in some rooms so that it was not easy to focus on all of them.
Some nice pictures attached.

The building itself was an interesting structure as it shows how they were able to renovate it from its old state and restore it to be used as an art museum.
I believe it would be better to check prior to your visit if there were any upcoming exhibitions as it was some what empty during our visit.
But there were some strong pieces that you would enjoy to see either way.

To start with this is a modern art museum in the middle east. Then, the works are almost all done by local Arab artistes. Third, the space is very interesting. It is a mix of courtyards, terraces, small rooms and passages making the entire experience interesting. While the exhibits were nothing much to write home about, nonetheless, this is a remarkable place for the effort behind it.

paintings that fell down and never rehung, no lights in a number of rooms, many artworks missing labels and some with labels just stuck actually onto the artwork!?, no website, no social media presence at all, no posters or any advertizing about events, no email ...if you are lucky the security guard, who does not speak any English, will show you around and try to turn on a few lights for you ...some nice artwork hidden here and there but you really have to look for it, also a nice traditional Kuwaiti building that has been converted into a museum... so much potential wasted... sad...

I am reviewing this on two levels - firstly the overall layout and experience and secondly the content.
The building is an interesting one and it's great that and old building has been renovated and kept in use. The domestic architecture and layout is clearly visible and has been used to set out the rooms in which the work is presented. However the approach is very static with no explanatory text or interpretation so unless you are familiar with art from the region you will lack context. There are no books or reference materials. This makes for a very static feel. There is also no clear layout so it is hard to see if the work is being presented according to themes or a timeline. This makes the hang seem random. Finally the quality of technical hang is poor as is the lighting.
For the content I am assuming that the intent is some level of chronological presentation. You need to be familiar with the approaches to painting and sculpture that this region has pursued (as separate to the development of the Western canon) if this work is to make sense. Otherwise to a Western trained eye this mostly looks like bad figurative work of limited imagination. Contextualised in the development of art from Egypt, Sudan, Oman and KSA it can be seen to be demonstrating the way the canon has evolved in the region and the various explorations of figurative, calligraphic and abstract genres

Amazing collection of art from all over the region. The museum is located inside a pre-oil Kuwaiti house, which is one of the few remaining pre-oil houses left. The museum is truly Kuwait's hidden jewel.

Best place to visit in Kuwait to learn more about Middle East and Kuwait. The museum is set in most modern building and the artifacts are well displayed. This is a must see place if you visit Kuwait.
