My husband was excited to begin my tour of Bahrain at the Grand Mosque. We arrived dressed respectfully, men in long pants (traditional cloak available to men wearing shorts) and I was offered an abaya (black cloak) to cover my clothes and a scarf for my head. We took part in a tour offered just as the mid afternoon Adhan (call to prayer) was beginning. The guides speak many languages and tours in languages other than English or Arabic can be arranged in advance. We were able to take pictures inside the beautiful building and we were encouraged to ask questions. We were given the option to stay for prayer time and observe from the upper mezzanine. Afterward, we had a couple of questions and a second guide took us back into the mosque to answer all of our questions for over an hour.
Friday mid-day is the busiest time at the mosque, and we would not have picked that time to go.
We would highly recommend taking the time to visit the mosque!

This was my second visit and learned something different. Your mosque tour is actually done by mosque personnel not your tour guide. On arrival, you check in and are issued appropriate covering and remove your shoes. First, a history of how the mosque was constructed and the history, followed by a brief explanation of mosque practices and the meanings of the prayers etc. Free to walk around briefly before leaving. Lots of free brochures and booklets if you wish to learn more,
Its respectful and a great way to appreciate the culture you are visiting.

I lived in Bahrain from 1979 to 1987 so didn't see the completion of the mosque until last week when I revisited the island.
It is a beautiful building although those who have visited Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque or the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi may be disappointed as it contains none of the opluence of these buildings.
Ladies can borrow an abeyah and headscarf, gents are requested to wear long trousers.
We arrived just after opening time at 9 a.m. and were immediately offered a guided tour as are all non-Muslim visitors to the mosque. We were very priviledged to have Mrs. Ghada Khafagy as our tour guide; she began by explaining the significance of the mosque's floor plan and then went on to clarify many Islamic traditions. I have been on many guided tours throughout a long travelling life and this was the very best; factual, humouristic and extremely interesting.
After the guided tour there is ample time to ask questions, take photographs and soak in the atmosphere.
I highly recommend this guided tour.

Here you can have a very informative quick tour inside the mosque which was built in mid 80’s as the biggest mosque in Bahrain until today. The design is modern Turkish style. The center is open everyday and everyone can get in, except during Friday pray (from 11 to 1)
There are volunteered tour guides, who speak Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi and some other languages.
No admission fees for this.

Ahmed Al Fateh Grand Mosque is a part of Islamic Center, that's includes the mosque, a department for Qur'anic studies and an Islamic library. it is located in Juffair in the capital Manama.
The mosque was built by the late Amir Sheikh Isa Bin Salman Al Khalifa. Construction began in December of 1984 and was officially opened on June 1988. It was named after Shaikh Ahmed Al Fateh, who conquered Bahrain in 1783.
The mosque is the largest in Bahrain, and among the largest in the world. The building reflects the Islamic unique architectural beauty. It covers an area of 6,500 m2 and can accommodate up to 7,000 Muslims to offer prayers at a time. The large dome is 16 m high and 22 m wide, constructed entirely of fiberglass, and weighing over 60 ton. It is currently the world's largest fiberglass dome. The two minarets (towers) are 70 m tall each.
The interiors of the Mosque are tastefully designed. The inside of the dome is illuminated by twelve ornate stained glass windows, and the floor and part of the walls are covered with Italian marble. The central chandelier was made in Austria, while the round lamps are handmade in France. The doors are made of teak wood imported from India, and throughout the mosque are calligraphy writings in Kufic style.
The library of the center has around 7000 books, some as old as 100 years or more. The books are only read inside the library.
The mosque is open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., except Fridays and public holidays. Guides are present to provide information free of charge.
Visitors and Tourists are requested to wear decent clothing; shorts and mini-skirts are not allowed. Female have to cover their head and are required to wear (Abayah) which will be provided at the reception. Taking off shoes before entering the Mosque is mandatory.

The visit was amazing. I am a Western Christian, and I learned so much at the Islamic Center/Mosque. Our guide was extremely helpful and provided literature in English. I think this is a must while visiting Manama.

i believe this is one of the top 50 biggest mosques in the world, and is one of the few mosques that allow non-muslims to enter it, the design is a bit outdated to my taste, but considering it was built 30 years ago, i'm fine with that.
