My husband and I went on the water canyoning hike with Q-Terra in the Golan (black gorge) last week and it was a phenomenal experience! We found it challenging, but not too tough and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery while learning how to make our way down the waterfalls. Stas and Dimah are a lot of fun, and excellent guides. We're in our late 20s but it's a fantastic adventure for many age groups. Definitely book with Q-Terra!

Just returned from a Pesach trip to Israel. Hours before yom tov started, I called Q-Terra to inquire about a possible two person rappelling trip at Qumran (Dead Sea area). I initially emailed then spoke with Anya. She was amazing -- she was able to coordinate a last minute trip to rappel in Qumran. Our guide was also awesome -- she had extensive experience rappelling and made us feel safe and in good hands.
There were only two of us on the trip, so we were able to finish the 3 different rappelling sites in approximately 3.5 hours. There is some 'hiking' (approx 45min) to get to the top of the canyon where the rappelling takes place. It isn't a difficult hike but depending on the temperature outside, be prepared. Q-Terra is very insistant that you bring with 3 litres of water per participant -- on the day of our hike the temperature was in the mid-20's so we were skeptical about the need for so much water. Sure enough, we went through all 3 litres. Listen to what they tell you and you'll be fine.
My understanding is that when the temperature rises (in the summer) Qumran may be too difficult to rappel so the preferred site are the salt caves. I know others that did this rappelling and they said it was awesome.
Bottom line -- I highly recommend Q-Terra. Great experience to have while you're in Israel.

When I was in Jerusalem, I wanted some Adventure. We stumbled upon Qterra and decided to give it a chance. What a fantastic way to really shake up a vacation. We went abseiling out near the Dead Sea, the heat was killer, but it was a unique way to experience the desert. Our guide Stas really loves what he's doing and it shows through his enthusiasm.

My two sons (18 and 22) and myself (53) were in Israel this summer and decided to go on an adventure day with Q-Terra. We had the choice of water canyoning in thre Golan, or Climbing in the Judean Mountains. So I let me sons choose....absailing over 50ft water falls .v. 250ft decents off sheer cliff faces in 50C desert heat...guess which one they dragged me on. But Stas was a great guide, and made sure we each carried 5 litres of water on the ascent. I must have drank 4 litres during the trek...and didn't pee once in 5 hours!
But at the top...fantastic views of the Dead Sea and the caves where the scrolls were found. And of course the decent...blimey! Jumping off 250 ft cliffs, with an Indiana Jones lookalike (Stas), grinning at you...well what an experience. Quite a challenge for an old bloke. The boys seem to take it all in their stride. After the trek, Stas took us for a dip in the Dead Sea. Certainly a day to remember.
So, if your're afraid of heights, or don't fancy climbing mountains in 50C temps, then perhaps the Golan Trek might be better. But if you want an experience you'll never forget...I'm sure either will do the job.

My friend and I looked up adventures in Israel and were pleasantly surprised when we found the opportunity to go canyoning on very quick notice. After phoning in and registering the next morning we found ourselves picked up in a van with an awesome guide on our way to either the Golan Heights or the Judaean Desert.
After a group decision we decided desert canyoning and were soon hiking and rappelling off giant desert canyon cliffs near the Dead Sea (in Qumran). What a fantastic experience - the guide, the people, the tour, capping it all off with a soak in the Dead Sea. We would highly recommend this great tour company.
cheers from Canada -

Yep, they've got a website.
You can book a tour.
And they offer group tours that a good value for 1 or 2 travelers, compared to hiring a dedicated guide.
But as of April 2017, email bounces back with "mailbox full".
To confirm my tour I tried calling, using Skype, two email addresses and Facebook but finally got back a terse:
"Hi. Q-Terra is not functioning anymore. For private tour you can contact our friends."
If the "friends" are similarly flaky, I'm not interested in upending my plans... again.
So don't book anything with QTerra, but do look for great ideas on their website, as they (in the past) seem to have done cool stuff.

This was the worst tour service provider I have experienced thus it warrants my first negative review I have posted on this site. We booked this tour months in advance prior to our trip. There was no communications even though we emailed and tried calling the tour guide multiple times. When we arrived in Jerusalem, we were informed a day prior to the tour that it was cancelled without any prior notice given to us. I had to scramble to find another tour at the last minute. Fortunately I was able to book with Dafna Feldman, who provided a great caving tour.
