The American Colony in Tel Aviv is a residential quarter that was established by American and German Utopian Christians. The pioneers were Anna and Horatio Spafford, who were millenarian in their outlook. It's an interesting area; accommodation is available.

This is a nice place to stop by en route to Jaffa from the Old Train Station. If you can go on Saturday or Sunday when the Maine Friendship House is open for guided tours. This is a house built by the Americans who came over in the late 19th century that has been restored. Our guide Maria was very knowledgable and passionate about the house and really made the experience interesting. There is also a short film that explains the history. The tours are free but it would be nice to leave a donation. Just across is the Lutheran church, which is pretty.

This place is not only about the American. You may find the Emanuel Lutheran church and some old building that were renovated lately. From Here you may go down to the street around the "Gesher" theater and find nice local Coffey places and restaurant. It is a short walk also to the old city of Jaffa.

Go back in time to 1866. See how the special relationships between the Israel and the USA were born.

My husband and I stayed at the gorgeous American Colony during the first half of our trip to Israel. The hotel has a tremendous amount of history, its location is superb, the facilities are beautiful and well thought out, and the staff treated us like family! I personally work in the industry and spend more time traveling around the world, staying in hotels more than I stay at home. The American Colony has a special place in our hearts and as a hotelier myself I can tell you that this is my favorite hotel I have stayed at. My husband and I didnt just stay at the hotel - we lived in the hotel. A special thank you to Mouayad who made our stay simply perfect and extremely special - there was no detail too small or task too big, and to Amiir who made us feel like friends, always wanting to make sure we felt at home. We will never forget it and look forward to coming back and recommending this jewel to all the travelers to the Holy Land.

We saw three nice American Buildings in this place, but it is not promoted enough area, perhaps because of their proximity to a lot of car workshops.

We struggled to find the American and German Quarter as the Street markings where not very good. There are also no signs indicating to the area. However when we did find it and the area was intreserting on what we could see. The area is under renovation and refurbishment so lots of construction and scaffolding in place. Still worth a quick visit. You can visit in the same day while visiting Old Jaffa, Old Hatacha Train Station and the IDF musuem. Entrance is free and you can access with a brisk 10 minute walk from the clock tower at Old Jaffa.

By chance we chose this little section of Tel Aviv to be our 'home' for a week.
And as it has been mentioned by previous reviewers: even born Tel Aviv'- nicks may not know about the existence, though have passed by sometimes daily....as in my immediate family circle.
We stayed at the American Colony Apartments, gorgeous place by the way, absolutely worthwhile!, and had the lovely view over the old houses and the beautifully restored rebuilt buildings from our balcony.
Tranquility, especially on Friday afternoon and the whole of Saturday. One can hear the birds singing happily, and an early morning stroll through the quarter is very peacefull.
Like in a small village, with nice gardens and beautiful trees, benches to sit and just enjoy, a mixed population of young & old which makes it very vivid, and so many dogs!
One really lives here and I could envy those people!
True, the immediate surrounding looks less appealing, it may take some time till all (tall?) buildings are finished and silence in general takes over again, but try not to get too critical now and just enjoy this unique place as it is, it may only get better over the years!

Surprisingly, even though this place exists since the 19th century, most veteran Tel-Avivis don't know this place or haven't visited it, albeit the proximity to the extremely popular Florentine neighborhood.
It's a very small block that houses many beautiful buildings, some preserved some not, that are a rarity in the Tel-Aviv landscape.
If you plan to go to Florentine, Jaffa or Neve Tzedek you definitely should include this in your visit.

This newly gentrifying section of Tel Aviv has a unique history--American Christians came here mid-century with their wooden homes on board ship and settled in the middle of the dunes to prepare the Holy Land for the return of the Jews. Even Peter Ustinov's uncle had a home here...it's an amazing bit of history that nearly no one knows...worth viewing the original homes and the restoration and renovation being done in the area along with the gentrification. Charming and surprising. Their are lovely concerts at the church there and one can visit the evangelical hostel there--the parking lot was once a beautiful garden with a small private zoo...
